Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flywheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the real seal and housing attaching bolts and remove the housing.
  14.

  1. Install Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installation Tool EN-47839 onto the rear of the crankshaft flange.

  3. Place a bead of RTV sealant around the seal housing mounting surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the seal housing and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Remove Installation Tool EN-47839
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Install the flywheel. Tighten the NEW bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), plus an additional 45°.
  12.  
  13. Install the transmission.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle and connect the battery.
  16.  

4.6L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel.
  8.  
  9. Install seal remover J-42841 onto the seal using 2 retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Using a variable speed drill, screw in eight 1 inch (25mm) self-tapping screws into the holes in the seal remover. Reduce drill speed when screws start threading into the seal.
  12.  
  13. Remove seal remover retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install a center forcing screw into the remover.
  16.  
  17. Using a socket wrench, tighten the center screw until the seal is pulled off the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Using a stiff piece of wire, clean the seal mounting area of any grease.
  2.  
  3. Place a small amount of gasket maker at the crankshaft split line across the end of the upper/lower crankcase seal.
  4.  
  5. Coat the outer diameter of the seal opening with clean engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Wipe the outer diameter of the flywheel flange clean.
  8.  
  9. Lubricate the outer rubber surface of the new seal with clean engine oil. Do not get any oil on the Green coating applied to the inner diameter of the seal.
  10.  
  11. Install the new seal onto mounting tool J-45930, and install the tool to the crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Tighten 3 mounting bolts into the tool until the tool is firmly mounted.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the tool center bolt until the tool bottoms against the crankcase.
  16.  
  17. Remove the tool and inspect the seal mounting. The seal depth must be equal around the circumference. If the depth is not equal, reinstall the tool and repeat the procedure.
  18.  
  19. Install the flywheel and tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), plus an additional 50°.
