Removal & Installation



3.6L Engine
Left Secondary
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plugs in order to ease crankshaft/engine rotation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  14.  
  15. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Remove the primary upper camshaft drive chain guide.
  18.  
  19. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right bank camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  22.  
  23. Remove the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  24.  
  25. Remove the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  26.  
  27. Remove the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  28.  
  29. Remove the left bank camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  32.  
  33. Clean and inspect all of the camshaft timing drive components. Replace components as necessary.

To install:

  1. Install the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  2.  
  3. Install the left bank camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  4.  
  5. Install the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  6.  
  7. Install the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  8.  
  9. Install the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Install the right bank camshaft intermediate drive chain idler.
  12.  
  13. Install the primary camshaft drive chain.
  14.  
  15. Install the primary upper camshaft drive chain guide.
  16.  
  17. Install the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  18.  
  19. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  20.  
  21. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  22.  
  23. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  24.  
  25. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  26.  
  27. Install the spark plugs.
  28.  
  29. Install the engine front cover.
  30.  

Primary
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plugs in order to ease crankshaft/engine rotation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  14.  
  15. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain upper guide.
  18.  
  19. Remove the primary camshaft timing chain.

To install:

  1. Install the primary camshaft timing chain.
  2.  
  3. Install the primary upper camshaft drive chain guide.
  4.  
  5. Install the primary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  8.  
  9. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  10.  
  11. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plugs.
  16.  
  17. Install the engine front cover.
  18.  

Right Secondary
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plugs in order to ease crankshaft/engine rotation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain. .

To install:

  1. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain.
  2.  
  3. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain guide.
  4.  
  5. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the right bank secondary camshaft drive chain tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plugs.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine front cover.
  12.  

4.6L Engine
Left Secondary

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a crankshaft socket, special tool J39946 and a camshaft holding tool, special tool EN46328.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right secondary timing chain.
  4.  
  5. Using the J39946 , rotate the crankshaft until the primary timing gear alignment marks (1) are adjacent to each other as shown.

  7. Remove the left camshaft position actuator housing. DO NOT remove the actuator solenoids from the housing.
    CAUTION
    The camshaft holding tools must be installed on the camshafts to prevent camshaft rotation. When performing service to the valve train and/or timing components, valve spring pressure can cause the camshafts to rotate unexpectedly and can cause personal injury

  8.  
  9. Install the EN46328  (1) on the bank 2 (left) camshafts (2).
  10.  
  11. Loosen and remove the left secondary timing chain tensioner bolts and tensioner.
    WARNING
    A wrench must be used on the hex of the camshaft when loosening or tightening in order to prevent component damage. Failure to prevent the torque reaction against the timing drive chain can lead to timing drive chain failure.

  12.  
  13. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when removing the camshaft oil control valve.
  14.  
  15. Loosen and remove the bank 2 (left) exhaust camshaft position oil control valve.
  16.  
  17. Slide the left exhaust camshaft position actuator off of the camshaft and remove the secondary timing chain from the camshaft actuator teeth.
  18.  
  19. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from
  20.  
  21. rotating when removing the camshaft oil control valve.
  22.  
  23. Loosen and remove the bank 2 (left) intake camshaft position oil control valve.
  24.  
  25. Slide the left intake camshaft position actuator off of the camshaft and remove the secondary timing chain from the camshaft actuator teeth.
  26.  
  27. Remove the left secondary timing chain from the engine.
  28.  
  29. Clean and inspect the camshaft timing drive components.
  30.  

To install:

The secondary timing chain (2) has 3 black links that aid in timing the camshaft position actuators to the intermediate sprocket. The black link (4) is aligned with the bank 2 exhaust actuator timing mark. The black link (3) is aligned with the bank 2 intake actuator timing mark. The black link (1) is aligned with the intermediate sprocket.

  1. Assemble the secondary timing chain to the intermediate sprocket aligning the sprocket LB timing mark to the timing chain black link.
  2.  
  3. Align the timing mark (5) of the LB intake camshaft position actuator with the timing chain black link (3) and install the actuator on the camshaft with the actuator timing mark perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head deck surface at the top of its rotation.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the oil control valve (10) to secure the intake actuator.
    WARNING
    A wrench must be used on the hex of the camshaft when loosening or tightening in order to prevent component damage. Failure to prevent the torque reaction against the timing drive chain can lead to timing drive chain failure.

  6.  
  7. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when tightening the oil control valve.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the oil control valve to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Align the timing mark (7) of the LB exhaust camshaft position actuator with the timing chain black link (4) and install the actuator on the camshaft with the actuator timing mark perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head deck surface at the top of its rotation.
  12.  
  13. Loosely install the oil control valve (8) to secure the exhaust actuator.
  14.  
  15. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when tightening the oil control valve.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the oil control valve to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the left secondary timing chain tensioner.
  20.  
  21. Install the right secondary timing chain.
  22.  
  23. Remove the EN46328 .
  24.  
  25. Install the left camshaft position actuator housing.
  26.  

Primary

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a crankshaft socket, special tool J39946 or equivalent.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. Align the primary timing marks (1) using the J39946.

  6.  
  7. Remove the secondary camshaft drive chains.
  8.  
  9. Remove the primary drive chain tensioner.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil outlet tube (4).

  13. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain guide bolts and guide.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the following as an assembly:

    Primary camshaft drive chain (3).
     
    Crankshaft sprocket.
     
    Camshaft intermediate sprocket.

  18.  
  19. Clean and inspect the camshaft timing drive components.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Align the timing marks (1) of the camshaft intermediate and crankshaft sprockets. The marks should be aligned vertically in the installed position.

  2.  
  3. Install the primary camshaft drive chain on the drive sprockets.
  4.  
  5. Use the J39946 to rotate the crankshaft until the crankshaft keyway is approximately at the 1 o'clock position.
  6.  
  7. Install the following as an assembly:

    Primary camshaft drive chain (3).
     
    Crankshaft sprocket.
     
    Camshaft intermediate sprocket.

  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt and tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the primary drive chain guide.

  12.  
  13. Install the primary drive chain guide bolts tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the primary drive chain tensioner.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil outlet tube (4) and bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the secondary camshaft drive chains.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pin from the primary timing chain tensioner release lever.
  22.  
  23. Ensure the primary timing marks (1) are aligned vertically.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil pump.
  26.  

Right Secondary

NOTE
This procedure requires the use of a crankshaft socket, special tool J39946 and a camshaft holding tool, special tool EN46328.

  1. Remove the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Using the J39946, rotate the crankshaft until the primary timing gear marks (1) are adjacent to each other as shown.

  4.  
  5. Remove the right camshaft position actuator housing. DO NOT remove the actuator solenoids from the housing.
    CAUTION
    The camshaft holding tools must be installed on the camshafts to prevent camshaft rotation. When performing service to the valve train and/or timing components, valve spring pressure can cause the camshafts to rotate unexpectedly and can cause personal injury

  6.  
  7. Install the EN46328  (1) on the bank 1 (right) camshafts (2).

  9. Loosen and remove the right secondary timing chain tensioner bolts and tensioner.
    WARNING
    A wrench must be used on the hex of the camshaft when loosening or tightening in order to prevent component damage. Failure to prevent the torque reaction against the timing drive chain can lead to timing drive chain failure.

  10.  
  11. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when removing the camshaft oil control valve.
  12.  
  13. Loosen and remove the bank 1 (right) exhaust camshaft position oil control valve.
  14.  
  15. Slide the right exhaust camshaft position actuator off of the camshaft and remove the secondary timing chain from the camshaft actuator teeth.
  16.  
  17. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when removing the camshaft oil control valve.
  18.  
  19. Loosen and remove the bank 1 (right) intake camshaft position oil control valve.
  20.  
  21. Slide the right intake camshaft position actuator off of the camshaft and remove the secondary timing chain from the camshaft actuator teeth.
  22.  
  23. Remove the right secondary timing chain from the engine.
  24.  
  25. Clean and inspect the camshaft timing drive components.
  26.  

To install:

The secondary timing chain has 3 black links that aid in timing the camshaft position actuators to the intermediate sprocket. The black link (2) is aligned with the bank 1 exhaust actuator timing mark. The black link (3) is aligned with the bank 1 intake actuator timing mark. The black link (1) is aligned with the intermediate sprocket.

  1. Assemble the secondary timing chain to the intermediate sprocket aligning the sprocket RB timing mark to the timing chain black link.

  3. Align the timing mark (5) of the RB intake camshaft position actuator with the timing chain black link (8) and install the actuator on the camshaft with the actuator timing mark perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head deck surface near the top of its rotation.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the oil control valve (2) to secure the intake actuator.
  6.  
  7. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when tightening the oil control valve.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the oil control valve to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Align the timing mark (3) of the RB exhaust camshaft position actuator with the timing chain black link and install the actuator on the camshaft with the actuator timing mark perpendicular (90 degrees) to the cylinder head deck surface near the top of its rotation.
  12.  
  13. Loosely install the oil control valve (1) to secure the exhaust actuator.
  14.  
  15. Use an open-end wrench on the hex cast into the camshaft in order to prevent the camshaft from rotating when tightening the oil control valve.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the oil control valve to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the right secondary timing chain tensioner.
  20.  
  21. Remove the EN46328 .
  22.  
  23. Install the right camshaft position actuator housing.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil pump.
  26.
