Removal & Installation

NOTE
The front wheels must be in the straight ahead position and the steering column locked before disconnect the intermediate shaft. Failure to do so may result in damage to the SRS coil.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Center the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Install Steering Column Anti-rotation pin J-42640 to lock the steering column.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Front air deflector
     
    Intermediate steering shaft lower pinch bolt
     
    Intermediate shaft from the steering gear
     
    Variable effort steering harness connector
     
    Outer tie rod retaining nuts
     
    Outer tie rods from steering knuckles
     
    Power steering hoses from steering gear
     
    Left brake line from brake hose and plug opening
     
    On AWD models, place a jack under the front differential
     
    On AWD models, remove the right engine mount-to-frame nut
     
    Raise the differential enough to clear the steering rack bolt

  9. On all models, remove the steering gear mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left rear lower control arm-to-frame mounting bolt and nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Install the left rear lower control arm-to-frame mounting bolt and nut.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering gear mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 134 ft. lbs. (180 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On AWD models, lower the differential.
  8.  
  9. On AWD models, install the right engine mount-to-frame nut and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  10.  
  11. On AWD models, remove the differential jack.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Left brake line to brake hose
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Outer tie rod to steering knuckles. Tighten the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Variable effort steering harness connector
     
    Intermediate shaft-to-steering gear
     
    Intermediate shaft pinch bolt and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Front air deflector
     
    Front wheels
     

  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel anti-rotation pin.
  18.  
  19. Fill the power steering oil reservoir.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the steering system.
  22.  
  23. Check and adjust the front wheel toe.
  24.  
  25. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  26.
