Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear propeller shaft coupler-to-drive pinion flange bolts and carefully slide the shaft away from the flange.
  6.  
  7. Wire the propeller shaft up with mechanics wire.
  8.  
  9. Install holding tool J-45012 to the pinion flange.
  10.  
  11. While holding the tool rigid, remove the pinion flange nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the holding tool and install J-45019 to the pinion flange and tighten the tool to remove the pinion flange.
  14.  
  15. Pry the pinion seal from the seal opening.

  17. Lubricate the pinion flange sealing surface with synthetic gear oil.
  18.  
  19. Using a seal installer, install the new pinion seal.
  20.  
  21. Install the drive pinion flange.
  22.  
  23. Clean the pinion shaft threads and pinion nut.
  24.  
  25. Apply Threadlock to two-thirds of the pinion shaft threads and allow it 10 minutes to dry.
  26.  
  27. Install the pinion nut to the pinion flange.
  28.  
  29. Install the holding tool and while holding the tool, tighten the nut to 210 ft. lbs. (285 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Remove the holding tool.
  32.  
  33. Clean the propeller shaft coupler bolts.
  34.  
  35. Apply threadlock to two-thirds of the coupler bolt threads and allow it 10 minutes to dry.
  36.  
  37. Install the propeller shaft and coupler to the drive pinion flange.
  38.  
  39. Install the bolts and washers and tighten the bolts 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Lower the vehicle.
