Hydraulic Control Module

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain brake fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the main fuse box and move aside.

  9. Disconnect the connector and move it aside.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake line unions and plug the holes.
  12.  
  13. Remove the two nuts securing the unit to the bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ABS unit.
  16.  
  17. To install, reverse removal procedure
  18.  
  19. Tighten mounting bolts to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Bleed brake system.
  22.  


CAUTION
Earth yourself by touching the car body before plugging in / unplugging components. Do not touch the component pins.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the brake system.
  6.  
  7. Remove battery and lower batter cover.

  9. For 2.8L engines, remove the brake servo heat shield.
    NOTE
    Take care when releasing the locking mechanism on the connector so as not to damage the connector. Pull the halves straight apart to avoid bending the pins. Removing hydraulic unit components

  11. Separate the connector (5) from the control unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pipes (6) from the unit.
  14.  
  15. For 2.8L engines, remove the brake pipes (7) from the master cylinder.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bracket from the spring strut tower.

  19. Lift up the unit. Removing bracket from the unit

  21. If changing the hydraulic unit/control module: Remove the bracket from the unit.

  23. If changing the hydraulic unit/control module: Remove the bolts holding the control module to the hydraulic unit. Carefully pull the control module away from the hydraulic unit.

To install: Installing gasket to hydraulic unit

  1. If you have changed the hydraulic unit/control module, make sure the gasket is situated in the groove in the control module. Press the control module in place on the hydraulic unit and tighten the bolts to: 2 ft. lbs. (2.5 Nm).

  3. If you have changed the hydraulic unit/control module, install the bracket to the unit and tighten to: 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Put the unit in place with guide pin in the rubber bushing.
  6.  
  7. Install the bolts to the spring strut tower and tighten to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Attach the brake pipes to the unit and tighten to: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  10.  
  11. For 2.8L engines, install the brake pipes to the master cylinder.
  12.  
  13. Attach the connector to the control module.
  14.  
  15. For 2.8L engines, install the heat shield on the brake servo.
  16.  
  17. Install the battery lower battery cover and the battery.
  18.  
  19. Fill with brake fluid and bleed the system.
  20.  
  21. Check for leaks and functionality.
  22.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Place a cover over the splash guard to protect it from any brake-fluid spillage.
  6.  
  7. Remove the battery cover and the battery.
  8.  
  9. Remove the electrical distribution unit and place to one side.

  11. Disconnect the connector (5) and place to one side.
  12.  
  13. If removing ESP unit, disconnect the connector (6) from the pressure sensor.
  14.  
  15. Clean the surfaces around the brake-pipe couplings.
  16.  
  17. Dismantle the brake pipe couplings (8).
  18.  
  19. For M/T vehicles, disconnect the clutch fluid hose (9) from the brake fluid reservoir, collect the brake fluid.

  21. To remove the hydraulic unit, it may be necessary to insert a screwdriver between the bracket and the wheel housing and pry carefully in order to reach the outer nut.

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten brake pipe unions to: 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm). Tighten the rear brake pipes first. Tighten one union before starting on the next.
  4.  
  5. If the unit has been changed, the control module must be configured.
  6.  
  7. Fill with brake fluid and bleed the system.
  8.  
  9. Check for leaks and functionality.
