Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Transmission assembly and lock the flywheel in positionPressure plate retaining nutsPressure plateClutch disc

    Pressure plate retaining nuts
     
    Pressure plate
     
    Clutch disc
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Clutch disc with pressure plate and torque the nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)Transmission

    Transmission
     

  2.  
  3. To help with installation use a guide pin to line up the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with fluid. Clutch cable

  6.  
  7. Test drive the vehicle.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission assembly and lock the flywheel in position
     
    Pressure plate retaining nuts
     
    Pressure plate
     
    Clutch disc
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Clutch disc with pressure plate and torque the nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Transmission
     

  2.  
  3. To help with installation use a guide pin to line up the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with fluid.

  6.  
  7. Test drive the vehicle.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Driven plate and drive plate on the flywheel. Hand tighten the boltsCenter the drive plate and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Remove the flywheel locking toolTransmission assembly

    Driven plate and drive plate on the flywheel. Hand tighten the bolts
     
    Center the drive plate and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Remove the flywheel locking tool
     
    Transmission assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission with clean fluid to the proper level.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission and install Flywheel Tool 83-94-868
     
    Pressure plate
     
    Clutch assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven plate and drive plate on the flywheel. Hand tighten the bolts.
     
    Center the drive plate and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Remove the flywheel locking tool
     
    Transmission assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission with clean fluid to the proper level.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission and install flywheel tool 83 94 868
     
    Pressure plate
     
    Clutch assembly
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Driven plate and drive plate on the flywheel. Hand tighten the bolts
     
    Center the drive plate and torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Remove the flywheel locking tool
     
    Transmission assembly
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission with clean fluid to the proper level.
  4.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Place the vehicle on a lift and engage it in 4th gear.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle assembly and lock the flywheel in position
     
    Pressure plate retaining nuts
     
    Pressure plate
     
    Clutch disc
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Clutch disc with pressure plate and torque the nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Transaxle
     

  2.  
  3. To help with installation use a guide pin to line up the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Fill the transaxle with fluid.
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission assembly.
  10.  
  11. Test drive the vehicle.
  12.  

9000 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery and tray
     
    Washer fluid container and connectors
     
    Stay for the Anitlock Braking System (ABS) hydraulic unit, if equipped
     
    Bulkhead cover and separate the speedometer cable connector by removing the washer hose, then the speedometer cable through the rubber grommet
     
    Air mass meter and intake air temperature sensor connectors
     
    Bypass valve delivery pipe hose
     
    Delivery pipe between the throttle housing and the intercooler, if equipped
     
    Starter motor
     
    Selector rod universal joint and selector rod
     
    Slave cylinder pressure line and pinch off the hose with clamps
     
    Left-hand engine mount and attach a sling to the engine lifting beam. Raise and support the vehicle.
     
    Left wheel and inner wheel housing
     
    Reverse light connector
     
    Ball joint
     
    Sway bar
     
    Three bottom bolts from the joint between the engine and the transaxle
     
    Speedometer cable at the transaxle
     
    Center and left skirts under the spoiler
     
    Subframe
     
    Universal joint
     
    Top nut and bolt from the clutch housing face
     
    Transaxle and install a flywheel locking tool
     
    Clutch assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Inspect the flywheel for wear, scoring, cracking or other damage. Replace or resurface, as necessary.

To install:

  1. Use a centering arbor type tool or an appropriate input shaft to center the clutch disc to the flywheel.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Prior to installation, ensure that the halfshaft is in position and the aluminum tube is pressed into the seal.



    Clutch pressure plate. Torque the bolts, alternately and evenly, in several steps, to 10-20 ft. lbs. (13-25 Nm). Remove the flywheel lock, if used.
     
    Transaxle assembly and engage the transaxle input shaft into the clutch plate splines
     



    Three bottom bolts into the joint face and torque the bolts to 40-74 ft. lbs. (54-100 m)
     
    Universal joint
     
    Subframe
     
    Sway bar
     
    Ball joint
     
    Starter
     
    Wheel housing bolts and torque the bolts to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-57 Nm)
     
    Left engine mount and torque the bolt to37-67 ft. lbs. (41-91 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Reverse light switch
     
    Wheel housing liners
     
    Left wheel
     
    Selector rod universal joint
     
    Slave cylinder pressure pipe (remove the clamping tongs)
     
    Speedometer cable
     
    Bulkhead cover
     

  4.  
  5. Bleed the slave cylinder, check the transaxle fluid level and road test the vehicle.
