Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with turbo, remove the intake manifold hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt from the compressor.

  13. Disconnect the compressor electric connector (5).
  14.  
  15. Remove the A/C pipes PAD-connection (6) from the compressor. Plug the openings.
  16.  
  17. Remove the compressor retaining bolts (7) from the attachment and lift up the compressor.
  18.  
  19. For engines equipped with turbo, perform the following:


    1. Remove the two upper retaining bolts (8a) for the compressor.
    2.  
    3. Raise the car and remove the air shield in front of the wheel housing.
    4.  
    5. Remove the lower retaining bolt (8c) and lower the compressor under the hoses for the oil cooler.
    6.

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor.
  2.  
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure
  4.  
  5. Bleed cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Test pressurize cooling system and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.3L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Raise car.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Electrical connector to the compressor located on the structure/console behind the right-hand headlamp
     
    Relieve drive belt tension
     
    Inlet hose with mass air flow sensor without unplugging the connector and set it aside
     
    Heat shield from the exhaust manifold
     
    By-pass pipe and valve, set aside
     
    Radiator fan connectors on the fan cowling and hose clamps holding the hose to the coolant expansion tank
     
    For A/T vehicles: oil cooler hose from the bottom of the fan cowling
     
    Fan cowling, 2 bolts and 2 locating grooves
     
    Pressure hose from the turbo

    Low-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings.
     
    High-pressure pipe from the compressor and push it aside. Plug the openings

  11. Raise the car and remove the air shields. Remove the drive belt from the compressor.

  13. Remove the 3 compressor retaining bolt, start with the top bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove compressor from the mounting hook.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install A/C compressor and tighten to:

    M8: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
     
    M10: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Install drive belt. Mount the air shields and lower the car.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate and install new O-rings to the compressor pipes.
  8.  
  9. Connect the high and low pressure pipe to the compressor. Tighten to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.  
  11. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Evacuate the A/C system and fill with R134a refrigerant.
  14.  
  15. Activate the A/C and let it run for at least 2 minutes at engine speed 1500 rpm.
  16.  
  17. Check for leaks and functionality.
  18.  

2.8L Engine




CAUTION
The A/C receiver and compressor oil absorb moisture from the air. Plug all connections immediately.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Air filter housing cover
     
    Mass air flow sensor pipe
     
    Engine cover
     
    Upper turbocharger delivery pipe
     
    Upper screws of the turbocharger delivery pipe
     

  8.  
  9. Raise the car.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Front spoiler shield
     
    Secondary air injection pump

    Turbocharger delivery pipe (10) on the front of the engine from the hose and A/C compressor. Lower the car
     
    A/C compressor's PAD connection (11). Plug the openings

  13. Raise the car.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect or remove the following:

    A/C drive belt
     
    A/C compressor

To install:

  1. Fill compressor with fluid.
  2.  
  3. Install the A/C compressor. Insert the lower bolts.
  4.  
  5. Lower the car.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper screw of the A/C compressor and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the pipe connections using new seals and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Raise the car.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the A/C compressor's lower screws to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  16.  
  17. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  18.  
  19. Bleed cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Test pressurize cooling system and check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. To run in the A/C compressor, activate the A/C and allow it to run for at least 2 minutes at an engine speed of 1350 rpm.
  24.  

3.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Inlet hose with mass air flow sensor without unplugging the connector and set it aside
     
    RH headlamp and RH blinker assembly
     
    Drive belt. Mark direction of rotation
     

  8.  
  9. Install hose clamp pliers on both hoses to the power steering fluid reservoir.

  11. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Electrical connector (7) for the compressor located on the structure/console behind the right headlamp and the connector from the holder
     
    A/C compressor's low and high pressure pipes

  13. Raise the car
  14.  
  15. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Cover under the radiator core
     
    Engine's side cover
     
    Low and high pressure pipes from the A/C compressor. Plug the pipes and compressor

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil level in the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower retaining bolt in the A/C compressor.
  4.  
  5. Install the A/C compressor in place and tighten two of the retaining bolts to: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the third retaining bolts on the A/C compressor and tighten to: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the low and high pressure pipes in the A/C compressor.
  10.  
  11. Screw the power steering pump cooling coil into the holders. Two in the sub-frame and two in the radiator bracket. Tighten to: 4 ft. lbs. (6 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Make the connections to the power-steering cooler loop (two joints) but do not tighten.
  14.  
  15. Lower the car.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the A/C compressor low and high-pressure pipes to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Raise the car.
  20.  
  21. Tighten power-steering cooler loop (two joints) to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) but do not tighten.
  22.  
  23. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  24.  
  25. Fill oil in the power steering fluid reservoir.
  26.  
  27. Start the engine, turn the steering wheel back and forth a few times and check for leaks.
  28.  
  29. Turn off the engine. Adjust the power steering fluid level. Turn off the engine. Adjust the power steering fluid level.
  30.  
  31. Evacuate the A/C system and refill with refrigerant.
  32.  
  33. Test the A/C system and check for leaks.
  34.  

Except 2.8L




CAUTION

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Raise the car.
  8.  
  9. Remove chassis reinforcement, front subframe and CV.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower engine cover.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the 3 plastic screws from the right front wing liner.
  14.  
  15. Remove drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the hose clip from the charge air pipe and fold down the rubber hose.

  19. Remove the screws (8) from the mounting that holds the charge air pipe to the oil pan. Carefully move the charge air pipe a little.

  21. Disconnect the A/C compressor's connector (9).
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the PAD connection (10) from the A/C compressor. Plug the openings.
  24.  
  25. Remove the screws (11) that hold the A/C compressor and move the compressor down.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Adjust the oil quantity in the A/C system.
  2.  
  3. Push up and install the A/C compressor. Tighten bolts to: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the plugs, replace the sealing washers and the PAD connection to the A/C compressor. Tighten to: 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Bleed cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Test pressurize cooling system and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. To run in the A/C compressor, activate the A/C and allow it to run for at least 2 minutes at an engine speed of 1350 rpm.
