Inspection



Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

2.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise vehicle and remove right front wheel and tire.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front part of the wheel well liner.
  6.  
  7. Relieve the strain on the belt tensioner by turning it clockwise with a flexible wrench. Lock the tensioner with a lock pin (87 92 335).
  8.  
  9. Remove the belt. If the old belt is being reused, mark out the direction of rotation.
  10.  
  11. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Check belt position on all pulleys.
  14.  

2000-2006 Models (Except 2.8L Engine)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and set aside.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the tension on the belt tensioner with a jointed handle and insert a 3.5 mm drill in the hole.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys.
  8.  
  9. Safely raise the front of the vehicle and remove front right wheel and the cover. Remove the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Check belt position on all pulleys.
  14.

2000-2002 (Except 2.3L Engine)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt circuit cover.
  8.  
  9. Carefully and slowly release the tension of the belt tensioner. Remove belt.
  10.  
  11. To install, fit the belt on all pulleys.
  12.  
  13. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Check belt position on all pulleys.
  16.  

2000-2006 (2.3L Engine)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt circuit cover.
  8.  
  9. Relieve tension on the belt tensioner by using a jointed wrench to turn it clockwise. Lock the tensioner with lock pin (87 92 335).
  10.  
  11. Remove the belt. If the old belt is to be refitted, mark the direction of rotation.
  12.  
  13. To install, fit the belt on all pulleys.
  14.  
  15. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  16.  
  17. Check belt position on all pulleys.
