Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

Print

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.

The hydraulic cam followers used in Saab engines do not require adjusting. The cam followers keep the valve clearance within 18.75-20.8mm. However, if the cam followers are making excessive noise or are diagnosed to be defective, perform the following procedure:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. If a cam follower is noisy, it can be found by removing the valve cover and, using a screwdriver, gently pushing down on each cam follower until the defective follower(s) is found by exhibiting a spongy feeling.
  6.
  7. Replace the defective cam follower(s); first removing the camshaft(s).
  8.
  9. Reinstall the camshaft(s) and the valve cover.
  10.

2.0L And 2.3L Engines

  1. Check and adjust the valve clearance relative to the working range of the tappet.
  2.
  3. Place the clearance gauge across two of the camshaft bearing seats with the depth gauge against the end of the valve stem.
  4.
  5. Verify that the maximum gauge depth of 0.81 inch (20.5mm) reaches down to the end of the valve stem as seen by the valve clearance gauge not bottoming against the bearing seat closest to the depth gauge.
  6.
  7. Then, check that the minimum depth 0.77 inch (19.5mm) does not reach the end of the valve stem. Correct valve position should be between the depth measurement minimum and maximum values.
  8.
  9. If the valve position deviates from the given measurements, adjustments are done on the valve stem or valve seat.
  10.
  11. The valve stem is shortened if measurement is below the minimum value and the valve seat is machined if the maximum value is exceeded. When adjusting the valve position, set this at a nominal value of 0.80 inch (20.2mm).
