Power Sunroof

Diagnosis & Testing
  1. The sunroof can be operated when the ignition is in position ON (+15) and its electric motor is continuously supplied with +30 via fuse 23.
  2.
  3. The electric motor is grounded through pin 6 to grounding point G33.
  4.
  5. Check that fuses 23 and 26 are intact and supplied with current.
  6.
  7. Check that current is supplied to motor 182.
  8.
  9. Check that switch 181 is working.
  10.
  11. Check the wiring harness, connectors and ground connections.
  12.
  13. Measure voltage to check for open circuits by performing the following:

    Engage the load

Set the multi-meter to voltage measurement and connect its minus cable to a good grounding point

Connect the voltmeter positive cable to the point where the voltage is to be tested

On the output side of a switch/control module, it is best to start there and then gradually move out towards the load

The break point in the circuit has been passed when the voltage disappears

On the input side of a switch/control module/consumer, it is best to start at the closest point to the power source (often the fuse) and then gradually move towards the switch/control module/consumer

The break point in the circuit has been passed when the voltage disappears

  14.
  15. Measure resistance to check for open circuits by performing the following:

Make sure the component or lead being tested is not carrying a current (e.g. by removing the associated fuse)

Set the multi-meter to resistance measurement and connect it across the component/lead being tested

Move the wiring harness in question while observing the ohmmeter

The resistance of the wiring harness should normally be less than 1 ohm. A specified value applies to components

  16.
  17. Check for short circuits to ground by performing the following:

Make sure the lead being tested is not carrying a current (e.g. by removing the associated fuse) and that any load has been disengaged

Set the multi-meter to resistance measurement

Connect one test cable to a good ground and the other to the point to be tested

Carefully move the wiring harness and make sure the multi-meter shows infinite resistance (OL) the whole time

  18.
  19. Check components connectivity and functionality. Replace components as necessary.
  20.

Removal & Installation
Motor
9-3 (2000-2002 Model)
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the interior lighting.
  6.
  7. Remove the 2 retaining screws that secure the lighting console. Pull off the console, fastened with 2 clips at the rear edge.

  8.
  9. Remove the grounding point for the motor and the 3 retaining screws.
  10.
  11. Remove the motor
  12.
  13. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  14.

9-3 (2003-2006)

NOTE
Before removing the electric motor for the sunroof, the sunroof must first be fully opened in tilt position and then closed from the same position. This must be done to synchronize the mechanics and electronics when fitting a new electric motor. By removing the side protection, it is possible to check that the mechanism is located correctly. The slide shaft must be between the marks (1 and 2) on both sides.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove the headlining.
  4.
  5. Remove the connector from the sunroof's electric motor.
  6.
  7. Remove the sunroof motor.
  8.

To install:

  1. Plug in the connector to the sunroof motor.
  2.
  3. If installing a new motor, perform the following before installing the motor:

Operate the electric motor for the sunroof to open it to ventilation position (tilt) by pressing the switch up. Release the switch, and then press the switch up again and hold for approx. 3 seconds

Using your thumb, press the drive wheel at the same time as running the sunroof motor as if to close the sunroof from the tilt position. This is done by pressing the switch to position two (forward)

  4.
  5. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  6.
  7. Once the control module has been fitted and in certain cases SPS programming has been carried out, Tech2 must be used to marry the control unit to the car. Go to the "All" menu and select the control module under "Add/Remove". Then select "Add" and follow the instructions. The ignition key must be in ON position. TIS 2000 may be required.
  8.

9-5
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Open the sunroof hatch so that the cover strip retaining screws are accessible.
  4.
  5. Remove the screws holding the cover strip.
  6.
  7. Close the hatch and tilt the rear edge.
  8.
  9. Remove the rear edge of the cover strip by pulling it towards the center of the car so that the clips come undone. Pull the cover strip out through the rear edge of the hatch. Be careful not to scratch the roof.
  10.
  11. Remove the cover strips over the screws on the left and right-hand sides of the sunroof hatch. The strips are secured with clips, pull them straight towards the center of the car.
  12.
  13. Close the sunroof hatch.
    NOTE
Check that the sunroof latch is properly closed. The wires slide mountings should be centered between the marks on the slide rail. The hatch must be closed when the motor is fitted, as the motor will be set in the closed position.

  14.
  15. Disconnect the mirror light connector.
  16.
  17. Remove the lamp glass by inserting a screw driver into the clip recesses in the front edge and carefully pry it out.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the connectors and remove the roof console
  20.
  21. Remove the rear-view mirror.
  22.
  23. Remove the retaining screws securing the motor.
