Brake Caliper

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Press caliper piston back into caliper.
  6.  
  7. Use a brake pedal clamp to hold the pedal down.
  8.  
  9. On 2003-04 models, remove fuse No. 6 from electrical center.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Fit the brake caliper onto the strut. Apply thread-locking compound to the mounting bolts and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the following: 2001-02: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)2003-04: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm) plus 30 degrees

    2001-02: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    2003-04: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm) plus 30 degrees
     

  2.  
  3. Install the brake hose onto the caliper, with new seals, if equipped. Torque connection to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.  


CAUTION
Be careful to install the brake hose in its original position.

  1. Release the brake pedal clamp.
  2.  
  3. Reinstall fuse No. 6 into electrical center.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the brake system and fill the fluid to the proper level.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheels.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake pads.
  6.  
  7. Depress the brake pedal slightly with a brake pedal clamp.
  8.  
  9. Remove fuse No. 1.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clip from the brake pedal pipe, swinging caliper only.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hose from the brake pedal pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the caliper guide pins and remove the hydraulic body, swinging caliper only.
  16.  
  17. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.
  18.  
  19. Remove the caliper.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the brake lines to the hydraulic body, swinging caliper only. Torque the line to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the hydraulic body and torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the caliper and torque the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm), fixed caliper only.
  6.  
  7. Install the brakes lines and torque them to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm), fixed caliper only.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose to the pipe and install the clip, swinging caliper only.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake pads.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pedal clamp and replace the fuse.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brake system and top off the fluid, if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Press in the brake piston with slip joint pliers.
  6.  
  7. Depress the brake pedal slightly with a brake pedal clamp.
  8.  
  9. Remove fuse No. 1.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the caliper retaining bolts and remove the caliper.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the brake caliper and torque the retaining bolts to 86 ft. lbs. (117 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the brake hose to the caliper and torque it to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake pedal clamp and replace the fuse
  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system and top off the fluid, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheels.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Press in the brake piston with slip joint pliers.
  6.  
  7. Depress the brake pedal slightly with a brake pedal clamp.
  8.  
  9. Remove fuse No. 1.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the caliper retaining bolts and remove the caliper.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the brake caliper and torque the retaining bolts to 86 ft. lbs. (117 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the brake hose to the caliper and torque it to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake pedal clamp and replace the fuse
  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system and top off the fluid, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheels.
  10.

  11. Remove the clip from the brake pedal pipe, swinging caliper only.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hose from the brake pedal pipe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the caliper guide pins and remove the hydraulic body, swinging caliper only.
  16.  
  17. Remove the brake hose from the caliper.
  18.  
  19. Remove the caliper.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the brake lines to the hydraulic body, swinging caliper only. Torque the line to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the hydraulic body and torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the caliper and torque the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm), fixed caliper only.
  6.  
  7. Install the brakes lines and torque them to 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm), fixed caliper only.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose to the pipe and install the clip, swinging caliper only.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake pads.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pedal clamp and replace the fuse.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the brake system and top off the fluid, if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheels.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Press caliper piston back into caliper.
  6.  
  7. Use a brake pedal clamp to hold the pedal down.
  8.  
  9. On 2003-06 models, remove fuse No. 6 from electrical center.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Fit the brake caliper onto the strut. Apply thread-locking compound to the mounting bolts and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the following:

    2002: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
     
    2003-06: 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm) plus 30 degrees

  3. Install the brake hose onto the caliper, with new seals, if equipped. Torque connection to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
    CAUTION
    Be careful to install the brake hose in its original position.

  5. Release the brake pedal clamp.
  6.  
  7. Reinstall fuse No. 6 into electrical center.
  8.  
  9. Bleed the brake system and fill the fluid to the proper level.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheels.

  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system and top off the fluid, if necessary.

  9. Install the front wheels.
