Anti-Roll Bar

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Suspend the engine using an engine hoist.
  4.  
  5. Raise the car and remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 front cover panels.
  8.  
  9. Detach the exhaust pipe at the turbo or exhaust manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust pipe at the joint.
  12.  
  13. Place a stand under the subframe.
  14.  
  15. Slacken the 2 front subframe retaining bolts slightly (7).
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 retaining bolts and the 2 retaining nuts at the rear of the subframe (8).
  18.  
  19. Lower the subframe at the rear.
  20.  
  21. Unscrew the 2 nuts securing the anti-roll bar (10).
  22.  
  23. Remove the anti-roll bar's two retaining clamps (11).
  24.  
  25. Remove the anti-roll bar.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the bushings with Molykote 33 or other grease of similar type.
  2.  
  3. Position the anti-roll bar on the subframe.
  4.  
  5. Fit the rubber bushings on left-hand and right-hand sides.
  6.  
  7. Position the retaining clamps and screw the bolts in place finger-tight.
  8.  
  9. Fit the rubber bushings and retaining nuts for the anti-roll bar links. Torque the nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the retaining bolts for the anti-roll bar clamps to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Raise the subframe at the rear and fit the 4 retaining bolts and 2 retaining nuts. The washers on the rear retaining bolts should abut against the body. Torque these as follows: Rear mounting-to-subframe: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) plus 75 degreesCenter mounting-to-subframe: 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm)Front retaining bolts: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)

    Rear mounting-to-subframe: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) plus 75 degrees
     
    Center mounting-to-subframe: 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm)
     
    Front retaining bolts: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
     

  14.  
  15. Fit the clamp at the exhaust pipe joint.
  16.  
  17. Attach the exhaust pipe to the turbo or exhaust manifold and bolt it in place.
  18.  
  19. Fit the 2 front cover panels.
  20.  
  21. Lower the car to the floor and remove the lifting hoist.
  22.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Cover over intake manifoldEngine cushion from engine mount and subframe

  4.  
  5. Position an engine hoist and chain and fit the hook in the engine's rear lifting eyebolt.
  6.  
  7. Raise the car and remove the front wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following: Reinforcement at subframe rear mounting pointCatalytic converter from muffler at joint2 steering gear retaining boltsBolts from subframe center attachment point; lower rear of subframeAnti-roll bar from linksBolts from clamps securing anti-roll bar to subframe

  10.  
  11. Withdraw the anti-roll bar through the wheel housing on the passenger side.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lift the anti-roll bar into position through the wheel housing on the passenger side. Make sure that it does not catch on any hoses or cables in the engine bay.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the bushes with Molykote 33 and fit them with the opening facing rearwards.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following: Bolts in clamps securing anti-roll bar to subframe; torque to 20 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).Nuts securing anti-roll bar to the links; torque to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)Subframe rear bolts at center attachment points; torque to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 45 degreesJoint between catalytic converter and mufflerSubframe at rear attachment points with the reinforcement; torque to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 45 degreesBolts securing reinforcement to subframe; torque to 50 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)Steering gear retaining bolts; torque to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)Front wheels

    Bolts in clamps securing anti-roll bar to subframe; torque to 20 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Nuts securing anti-roll bar to the links; torque to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Subframe rear bolts at center attachment points; torque to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 45 degrees
     
    Joint between catalytic converter and muffler
     
    Subframe at rear attachment points with the reinforcement; torque to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 45 degrees
     
    Bolts securing reinforcement to subframe; torque to 50 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
     
    Steering gear retaining bolts; torque to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Lower the engine onto the rear engine cushion and remove the lifting beam.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolts securing the engine cushion to the subframe to 20 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolts securing the rear engine cushion to the engine mount to 35 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Refit the cover over the intake manifold.
  14.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.

  3. Place the wheels in a straight forward position and secure steering wheel in this position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Front left wheelRear nut from the left fender linerSpoiler shieldCut exhaust pipe at right angles about 3.4 inches (87mm) in front of front mufflerFront part of exhaust pipe; clean cut section of burrs and dirtFront section of exhaust systemSteering shaft from steering gear at pinch boltHeat shield from steering gearTrack rod from steering swivel member on left sideEngine torque rod from subframeRear subframe bolts and stays; slacken front bolts several turns; hold down subframe with wedgesAnti-roll bar links from anti-roll barAnti-roll bar from subframe; pull out to left between bulkhead partition and subframe

    Anti-roll bar from subframe; pull out to left between bulkhead partition and subframe
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Position the anti-roll bar in place between the bulkhead partition and the subframe.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the anti-roll bar bushings.
  4.  
  5. Attach the anti-roll bar to the subframe. Be sure the opening of the rubber bushings faces forward. Torque fasteners to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lift up the subframe to the body. Enter the bolts for the subframe and stays on both sides.
  8.  
  9. Position the trolley lift with jig underneath and tighten the bolts on both sides to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) plus 135 degrees.
  10.  
  11. Lower and pull trolley lift out of the way.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the rear stay bolts to 66 ft lbs. (90 Nm) plus 45 degrees.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following: Heat shield to steering gearEngine torque rod; torque to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm), plus 90 degreesAnti-roll bar links on both sides; torque to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)Left-hand track rod to steering swivel member; torque to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)Rear fender liner edgeSteering shaft to steering gear; be sure groove in steering gear shaft is set in correct position so bolt fits in the groove; torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)Front part of exhaust pipe and fit a splice; torque clamps to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)Front wheelRelease steering wheel fixing

    Heat shield to steering gear
     
    Engine torque rod; torque to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm), plus 90 degrees
     
    Anti-roll bar links on both sides; torque to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm)
     
    Left-hand track rod to steering swivel member; torque to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
     
    Rear fender liner edge
     
    Steering shaft to steering gear; be sure groove in steering gear shaft is set in correct position so bolt fits in the groove; torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
     
    Front part of exhaust pipe and fit a splice; torque clamps to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
