Lower Ball Joints

Removal & Installation




NOTE
The ball joint cannot be removed from the control arm. To replace the ball joint, the control arm must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Sway bar link bolt
     
    Ball joint out of the steering knuckle
     
    Retaining nut at the support arm
     
    Retaining bolt at the subframe

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Arm and bolt at the subframe and torque the retaining bolt at the subframe to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
     
    Bolt at the support arm and torque the bolt to 68 ft. lbs. (92 Nm)
     
    Sway bar link and torque the link to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Ball joint and torque to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check front wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Transverse link from the longitudinal link and place a spacer between the upper and lower links
     
    Press the brake pistons back
     
    Brake line bracket from the longitudinal link
     
    Brake caliper bolts and support the caliper with wire ties
     
    Antilock Braking System (ABS) sensor connector, if equipped
     
    Hub retaining nuts
     
    Unhook the handbrake return spring and cable
     
    Hub and brake disc
     
    Press out the ball joint with tool 89 96 761
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Press in the ball joint with tool 89 96 761
     
    Hook the handbrake return spring and cable to the hub and brake disc
     
    Hub on the back plate and secure it to the longitudinal link with new nuts and torque to 40 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) plus 30 degrees
     
    ABS sensor connector
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Brake line bracket to the longitudinal link and torque the bolt to 70 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) plus 60 degrees
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Depress the brake pedal and verify proper operation of the braking system.
  4.
