Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Sway bar hardware
     
    Ball joint
     
    Support arm to lower control arm nut
     
    Lower control arm to subframe bolt
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm and subframe bolt and hand tighten the bolt
     
    Support arm to lower control arm using a new nut and torque the nut to 68 ft. lbs. (92 Nm)
     
    Ball joint and torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) and the lower control arm to subframe bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
     
    Sway bar hardware and torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise front of vehicle and remove front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt holding the lower control arm to the steering swivel member.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the level sensor.
  8.  
  9. Disassemble the lower control arm front attachment to the subframe.
  10.  
  11. Slacken the bolt which holds the rear bushing to the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear bushing from the subframe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower control arm from the steering swivel member and lift away the lower control arm.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Lift up the lower control arm and fit the bolt for the front bushing.
  2.  
  3. Fit the rear bushing to the subframe. Torque bolt to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm ), plus 90 degrees.
  4.  
  5. Connect the lower control arm to the steering swivel member with a new nut. Hold the bolt with a wrench so that the bolt does not rotate. Torque nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    WARNING
    Press up the pin carefully. The groove in the pin must be visible in the screw hole in the spindle housing. If the rubber gaiter is pressed down, it will not seal properly to the swivel pin.

  7. Remove the anti-roll bar link from the anti-roll bar and lift the lower control arm up to normal position.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the front lower control arm attachment to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) plus 90 degrees.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolt holding the rear bush to the lower control arm. Torque the bolt to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) plus 30 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect the anti-roll bar link and torque bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  14.  
  15. If equipped, fit the level sensor.
  16.  
  17. Fit the wheel.
  18.  
  19. Lower the car to the floor.
  20.  
  21. Carry out 4-wheel checking and alignment.
  22.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the anti-roll bar hardware.
  6.  
  7. Separate the lower control arm ball joint from the steering swivel member.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower control arm to subframe bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower control arm.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower control arm to the subframe and install the subframe bolt, then hand tighten the bolt.

    Install the ball joint into the steering swivel member and torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) and the lower control arm to subframe bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Install the anti-roll bar hardware.
  4.  
  5. Install the front wheel.
  6.
