Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Slacken center nut on top end of strut while vehicle is resting on the ground.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Hub nut
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    Caliper. Be sure the caliper is properly supported and not hanging from the brake hose
     
    Rotor and backing plate
     
    Tie rod end
     
    Sway bar hardware and bushing
     
    Ball joint
     
    Three upper strut mounting bolts
     
    Strut housing
     
    Spring and shock absorber cartridge
     

  6.  
  7. Place the strut in a vise and compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the self-locking nut from the bearing plate and discard the nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil spring, bellows and rubber bumper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper flange nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut cartridge from the housing.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New strut cartridge and torque the spanner nut to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm)
     
    Coil spring. Be sure the end of the spring is up against the spring stop
     
    Upper spring seat. Make sure the notches are properly aligned. Place the upper bearing assembly on the upper seat and secure it using a new self-locking nut

  3. Remove the spring compressor and be sure the coil spring stays properly seated.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and torque the upper mounting bolts 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Ball joint and new self locking nut and torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end
     
    Sway bar hardware and torque to 96 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Backing plate and rotor
     
    Caliper
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    Hub nut. Do not tighten yet.
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Hub nut and torque the nut to 125 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) plus an additional 45 degrees
     

  6.  
  7. Pump the brake pedal to position the brake caliper piston.
    CAUTION
    Do not attempt to move the vehicle until a firm pedal is obtained.

  9. Check front wheel alignment.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Nut from the anti-roll bar link
     
    Steering swivel member from the strut and move the Antilock Braking System (ABS) sensor cable and brake hose aside
     
    Upper retaining bolts from the strut
     
    Strut assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Place the strut in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Compress the spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the self locking nut.
  10.  
  11. Coil spring, bellows and rubber snubber.
  12.  
  13. Upper flange nut
  14.  
  15. Strut cartridge from the housing
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Compression stop, spring seat, rubber boot and spring. Make certain that the lower end of the spring is properly seated
     
    Upper spring seat. Make sure the notches are properly aligned. Place the upper bearing assembly on the upper seat and secure it using a new self-locking nut and torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the spring compressor and be sure the coil spring stays properly seated.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Strut assembly and torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    Press the steering swivel member inward and torque the bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) plus 45 degrees
     
    Anti roll bar link and torque the nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    ABS sensor cable and brake hose
     
    Front wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
