  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cableLower engine cover (2003-04 only)WheelHub center nutBall jointSway bar hardware and rubber bushing

    Negative battery cable
     
    Lower engine cover (2003-04 only)
     
    Wheel
     
    Hub center nut
     
    Ball joint
     
    Sway bar hardware and rubber bushing

  5. Push down on the lower control arm. Using a rubber mallet, tap the halfshaft out of the hub.
  6.  
  7. Move the strut to one side. Be extremely careful not to stretch or break the Antilock Braking System (ABS) sensor cables or brake hoses. Place a drain pan under the transmission to catch any fluid spillage.
  8.  
  9. On left side halfshaft, remove the power steering pressure line from clamps.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following: HalfshaftRemove the inner halfshaft joint from the transmission on the left-hand sideRemove the halfshaft joint from the intermediate shaft on the right-hand side.

    Remove the inner halfshaft joint from the transmission on the left-hand side
     
    Remove the halfshaft joint from the intermediate shaft on the right-hand side.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: HalfshaftOn left side, power steering line in clipsHub and new center nut onto halfshaft. Do not tighten yet.Ball joint and torque the ball joint nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)Sway bar to the lower control arm. Install the rubber bushing, a new washer and new retaining nut and torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)WheelsNegative battery cable
    1. Halfshaft
    2.  
    3. On left side, power steering line in clips
    4.  
    5. Hub and new center nut onto halfshaft. Do not tighten yet.
    6.  
    7. Ball joint and torque the ball joint nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    8.  
    9. Sway bar to the lower control arm. Install the rubber bushing, a new washer and new retaining nut and torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)

    11. Wheels
    12.  
    13. Negative battery cable
    14.  

  2.  
  3. Tighten the hub center nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Check the transmission fluid level and top off if necessary.

Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cableFront wheelHub nutHeadlamp position sensor fasteners (move fastener aside), if equippedHalfshaft from the transmission, left sideCover and knock out the halfshaft from the intermediate shaft, right side onlyAntilock Brake System (ABS) cable fasteners and clipsBall joint from the steering swivel and lower the suspension armStrutHalfshaft from the hub by tapping lightly on it
  1. Negative battery cable

  3. Front wheel
  4.  
  5. Hub nut
  6.  
  7. Headlamp position sensor fasteners (move fastener aside), if equipped
  8.  
  9. Halfshaft from the transmission, left side
  10.  
  11. Cover and knock out the halfshaft from the intermediate shaft, right side only
  12.  
  13. Antilock Brake System (ABS) cable fasteners and clips
  14.  
  15. Ball joint from the steering swivel and lower the suspension arm
  16.  
  17. Strut
  18.  
  19. Halfshaft from the hub by tapping lightly on it
  20.

To install:



Install or connect the following: Halfshaft to the hub and hand tighten the hub nutHalfshaft to the transmission and make certain that the circlip snaps into positionHalfshaft to the intermediate shaft and make certain that the circlip snaps into positionBall joint to the steering swivel and torque the fastener to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)ABS cable to the clipsFront wheel and torque the hub nut to 123 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) plus an additional 45 degreesNegative battery cable
  1. Halfshaft to the hub and hand tighten the hub nut
  2.  
  3. Halfshaft to the transmission and make certain that the circlip snaps into position
  4.  
  5. Halfshaft to the intermediate shaft and make certain that the circlip snaps into position
  6.  
  7. Ball joint to the steering swivel and torque the fastener to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
  8.  
  9. ABS cable to the clips
  10.  
  11. Front wheel and torque the hub nut to 123 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) plus an additional 45 degrees
  12.  
  13. Negative battery cable
  14.  

 
Check and fill the transmission fluid to the proper level.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Hub nut
     
    Halfshaft from the transmission, left side
     
    Cover and knock out the halfhsaft from the intermediate shaft, right side only
     
    Antilock Brake System (ABS) cable fasterners and clips
     
    Ball joint from the steering swivel and lower the suspension arm
     
    Strut
     
    Halfshaft from the hub by tapping lightly on it

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft to the hub and hand tighten the hub nut
     
    Halfshaft to the transmission and make certain that the circlip snaps into position
     
    Halfshaft to the intermediate shaft and make certain that the circlip snaps into position
     
    Ball joint to the steering swivel and torque the fastener to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm)
     
    ABS cable to the clips
     
    Front wheel and torque the hub nut to 123 ft. lbs. (170 Nm) plus an additional 45 degrees
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Check and fill the transmission fluid to the proper level.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Hub center nut
     
    Ball joint
     
    Sway bar hardware and rubber bushing

  5. Push down on the lower control arm. Using a rubber mallet, tap the halfshaft out of the hub.
  6.  
  7. Move the strut to one side. Be extremely careful not to stretch or break the Antilock Braking System (ABS) sensor cables or brake hoses. Place a drain pan under the transaxle to catch any fluid spillage.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft
     
    Hub and new center nut onto halfshaft. Do not tighten yet.
     
    Ball joint and torque the ball joint nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Sway bar to the lower control arm. Install the rubber bushing, a new washer and new retaining nut and torque the nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Tighten the hub center nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Check the transaxle fluid level and top off if necessary.
