2000-2002 Model
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Pinch heater hoses by firewall connections with hose clamp pliers.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Plug the ends of the fittings on the valve.
  10.  
  11. Blow any remaining coolant from the heater core with compressed air.
  12.  
  13. Remove the glove compartment retaining screws, bolt, quick-release pin and bracket catch. Pull the glove compartment out partway to disconnect the lamp; the remove the glove compartment.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with automatic climate control (ACC), remove ACC unit.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Glove box
     
    Panels from both side of center console
     
    Cover around ignition
     
    Rear ashtray
     
    Rear air vents and cover
     
    Bolts holding rear part of center console
     
    Window switches
     
    Center console
     

  18.  
  19. Remove the floor air ducts in front of the heater box.
  20.  
  21. Open the heater box housing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clips securing the hoses to the heater box.
  24.  
  25. Remove toggle clips on side of heater box, pull down on pipes and lift out the heater core.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and connect the pipes with clips.
  2.  
  3. Close the heater box.
  4.  
  5. Install the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Install the center console
     
    Window switches
     
    Rear part of center console
     
    Rear air vent and cover
     
    Rear ashtray
     
    Cover around ignition
     
    Glove box
     

  8.  
  9. Install the ACC unit, if removed.
  10.  
  11. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Remove pinching pliers.
  12.  
  13. Refill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  18.  

2001-02
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  6.  
  7. Pinch heater hoses by firewall connections with hose clamp pliers.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Plug the ends of the fittings on the valve.
  10.  
  11. Blow any remaining coolant from the heater core with compressed air.

  19. Remove the floor air ducts in front of the heater box.
  20.  
  21. Open the heater box housing.
  22.  
  23. Remove the clips securing the hoses to the heater box.

  25. Remove toggle clips on side of heater box, pull down on pipes and lift out the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and connect the pipes with clips.
  2.  
  3. Close the heater box.
  4.  
  5. Install the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  6.

  9. Install the ACC unit, if removed.
  10.  
  11. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Remove pinching pliers.

  13. Refill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

  9. Install the ACC unit, if removed.
  10.

  13. Remove heater core cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pipe clamps from the heater core.
  16.  
  17. Pull the pipes out from the heater core.
  18.  
  19. Carefully pull of the instrument panel on the passenger side and pull out the heater core.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Place O-rings and insert the heater core into position.
  2.  
  3. Reposition instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install pipes into heater core and install clamps.
  6.  
  7. Install heater core cover.
  8.

  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start and run the engine at varying speeds until the cooling fan comes on. Top up the coolant, then continue to run the engine until the cooling fan comes on 3 more times.
  14.  
  15. Stop the engine and check coolant level.
  16.  
  17. Check for leaks.
  18.

  17. Pull the pipes out from the heater core.

  19. Carefully pull of the instrument panel on the passenger side and pull out the heater core.

To install:

  1. Place O-rings and insert the heater core into position.
  2.  
  3. Reposition instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install pipes into heater core and install clamps.
  6.  
  7. Install heater core cover.
  8.

  11. Refill the cooling system.

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front side console panel on passenger side.
     
    Passenger sound shield.
     
    ACC or MCC module.
     
    Ashtray
     
    Instrument panel right side end cover
     
    Passenger side A-pillar trim
     
    Nuts holding dashboard on passenger side (through end opening)
     
    4 nuts holding instrument panel (through center console opening)

  13. Remove heater core cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pipe clamps from the heater core.
  16.  
  17. Pull the pipes out from the heater core.
  18.  
  19. Carefully pull of the instrument panel on the passenger side and pull out the heater core.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Place O-rings and insert the heater core into position.
  2.  
  3. Reposition instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Install pipes into heater core and install clamps.
  6.  
  7. Install heater core cover.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

  11. Refill the cooling system.

  13. Remove the trim from the side of the center console.
  14.  
  15. Remove the air vent from the air duct. Do not remove the seal.
  16.  
  17. Detach the pad connector for the piping to the heater core.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 4 heater core housing bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and 4 mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Replace and lubricate the O-rings with synthetic Vaseline. Place O-rings on heater core pipes.
  4.  
  5. Connect the pipes to the heater core and screw on the pad connector.
  6.  
  7. Fit the air vent to the air duct.
  8.  
  9. Replace the side trim on the center console.
  10.  
  11. Install the glove compartment.
  12.  
  13. Connect the heater core hoses to the engine bulkhead connections.
  14.  
  15. Refill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Run engine at varying speeds until the cooling fan comes on.
  18.  
  19. Open the expansion tank cap and top up the coolant.
  20.  
  21. Let the engine run until the cooling fan has started 3 more times.
  22.  
  23. Stop the engine and top up the coolant.
  24.  
  25. Check for leaks.
  26.

To install:

  17. Detach the pad connector for the piping to the heater core.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 4 heater core housing bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and 4 mounting bolts.

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Evacuate the A/C system.

    Remove the center console.
     
    Remove the front seats.
     
    Fold away the floor carpeting and remove the air ducts from under the seats.
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the dashboard as follows:
    1. Remove the speaker grille and remove the speakers.
    2.  
    3. Remove the center dashboard cover.
    4.  
    5. Remove the glove box.
    6.  
    7. Remove the air duct.
    8.  
    9. Remove the left side air bag and horn.
    10.  
    11. Remove the steering wheel nut and remove the steering wheel.
    12.  
    13. Data Link Connector (DLC).
    14.  
    15. Remove the lower dashboard panel and air duct.
    16.  
    17. Remove the floor light.
    18.  
    19. Remove the gear lever gaiter, if equipped
    20.  
    21. Remove the center compartment and ashtray.
    22.  
    23. Disconnect the seat heater and cigarette lighter
    24.  
    25. Disconnect the central locking system switch.
    26.  
    27. Remove the fuse box.
    28.  
    29. Remove the steering column gaiter.
    30.  
    31. Remove the instrument panel.
    32.  
    33. Remove the left side air duct.
    34.  
    35. Remove the right side air bag.
    36.  
    37. Remove the front scuff plate.

      Remove the knee bolsters.
       
      Remove the relay holder
       
      Remove the steering column as an assembly.
       
      Remove the pedal bracket.
       
      Remove the center dashboard member brace.
       
      Remove the center mounting stabilizer plate
       
      Disconnect the automatic control module.
       
      Remove the charge air cooler to throttle body pipe.
       
      Remove the charge air bypass valve solenoid.
       
      Remove the A/C pipes from the expansion valve.
       
      Remove the expansion valve.
       
      Disconnect the drain hoses from the climate unit.
       
      Remove the heating and ventilation unit from the bulkhead.

To install:



Install the heating and ventilation unit to the bulkhead
 
Connect the drain hoses on both sides of the unit
 
Install the air ducts under the front seats
 
Install the screws that hold the heating and ventilation unit to the bulkhead
 
Install the expansion valve
 
Install the A/C pipes to the expansion valve with new O-rings
 
Connect the heat exchanger hoses at the bulkhead
 
Solenoid valve and holder to the bulkhead
 
Solenoid valve cover
 
Connect the pipe between the charge air cooler and the throttle body
 
Install the 4 connectors to the heating and ventilation unit on the right hand side
 
Place the dashboard into position
 
Install the outer mountings
 
Install the center mounting
 
Install the stabilizer plate in the center mounting
 
Install the pedal bracket
 
Install the steering column as an assembly
 
Install the relay holder
 
Install both knee bolsters
 
Install the center cable conduit
 
Connect all ground cables
 
Install the center console
 
Install the front seats
 
Fill and bleed the cooling system
 
Recharge the A/C system
 
Connect the negative battery cable
 

  1. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  2.

Removal And Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. Plug the ends of the fittings on the valve.
  6.  
  7. Blow any remaining coolant from the heater core with compressed air.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove compartment retaining screws, bolt, quick-release pin and bracket catch. Pull the glove compartment out partway to disconnect the lamp; the remove the glove compartment.
  10.  
  11. Remove the floor console by performing the following procedure:

    Apply the handbrake.
     
    Remove the ignition switch cover plate by loosening the left front corner first and working around the plate counterclockwise. Disconnect the ignition switch lighting connector.
     
    Remove the rear ashtray. Remove the rear trim panel retaining screws and trim panel.
     
    Remove the floor console retaining screws and nuts.
     
    Pull the floor console to the rear and lift to gain access to the window lift and interior light switch connectors.
     
    Remove and disconnect the window lift and interior light switches.
     
    Lift and remove the floor console.

  13. Remove the center console side panel screws and remove both side panels.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with a manual transmission, release the shift lever boot clips and remove the boot.
  16.  
  17. Reach in through the side panel openings and push out the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the electrical and mechanical connectors (as applicable) and remove the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the center console electrical connectors.
  22.  
  23. Remove the center console-to-instrument panel quick-release pins.
  24.  
  25. Remove the center console.
  26.  
  27. Cut the tie-wraps and remove the rear air ducts.
  28.  
  29. Open the heater core case.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the hoses from the heater core.
  32.  
  33. Remove the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  34.  
  35. Pull the heater hoses down and lift out the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and connect the heater hoses.
  2.  
  3. Install the toggle clips at the sides of the heater core case.
  4.  
  5. Connect the hoses to the heater core.
  6.  
  7. Close the heater core case.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear air ducts.
  10.  
  11. Install the center console.
  12.  
  13. Install the center console-to-instrument panel quick-release pins.
  14.  
  15. Connect the center console electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Install the heating and air conditioning control panel and connect the electrical and mechanical connectors (as applicable).
  18.  
  19. Install the heating and air conditioning control panel.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the boot and the shift lever boot clips.
  22.  
  23. Install the center console side panels and screws.
  24.  
  25. Install the floor console by performing the following procedure:

    Install the floor console.
     
    Connect and install the window lift and interior light switches.
     
    Install the floor console retaining screws and nuts.
     
    Install the rear trim panel and retaining screws. Install the rear ashtray.
     
    Connect the ignition switch lighting connector. Install the ignition switch cover plate.
     
    Release the handbrake.

  27. Install the glove compartment, the bracket catch, the glove compartment retaining screws, the bolt and the quick-release pin.

  29. Connect the heater hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment.

  31. Refill the cooling system.
    NOTE
    On 6-cylinder models, bleed the cooling system.

  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

Removal And Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Remove the blower motor assembly by performing the following procedures:

    Remove the hood.
     
    Remove the windshield wiper arms.
     
    Remove the windshield wiper motor and air conditioning evaporator cover panels.
     
    Disconnect the blower motor control unit electrical connector.
     
    Remove the cowl cover panel seal and the signal converter.
     
    Remove the cowl cover panel.
     
    Remove the electronic ignition control unit mounting bolts and move the ignition unit to one side.
     
    Remove the 4 cowl lead-through panel screws and remove the lead-through panel.
     
    Disconnect the windshield wiper electrical connector and remove the windshield wiper mechanism.
     
    Remove the coolant hose grommets and disconnect the coolant hose quick-disconnect couplings at the heater core. Discard the O-rings.
     
    Remove the cruise control vacuum pump mounting screws and push the pump aside.
     
    Remove the evaporator retaining screws and the refrigerant hose retaining clips.
     
    Disconnect the temperature control cable from the temperature valve.
     
    Remove the engine bracket from the right rear corner of the engine compartment.
     
    Remove the rear motor-mount nut. Using an engine sling attached to the rear engine-lift hook, carefully tilt the engine forward.
     
    Carefully lift the evaporator, release the blower motor mounting clips and tilt the blower motor assembly to lift out.
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core.
  2.  
  3. Install the blower motor assembly by performing the following procedures:

    Install the blower motor assembly.
     
    Install the rear motor-mount nut.
     
    Install the engine bracket to the right rear corner of the engine compartment.
     
    Connect the temperature control cable to the temperature valve.
     
    Install the refrigerant hose retaining clips and the evaporator retaining screws.
     
    Install the cruise control vacuum pump and mounting screws.
     
    Using new O-rings, connect the coolant hose quick-disconnect couplings at the heater core.
     
    Install the windshield wiper mechanism and connect the windshield wiper electrical connector.
     
    Install the lead-through panel and the 4 cowl lead-through panel screws.
     
    Install the electronic ignition control unit and mounting bolts.
     
    Install the cowl cover panel.
     
    Install the signal converter and the cowl cover panel seal.
     
    Connect the blower motor control unit electrical connector.
     
    Install the air conditioning evaporator cover panels and the windshield wiper motor.
     
    Install the windshield wiper arms.
     
    Install the hood.
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
