Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the weight on the lower suspension arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Clean, lubricate and remove the bolts which holds the shock absorber to the steering swivel member.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber bracket from the body and lift the shock absorber out.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bracket from the shock absorber.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the bracket to the shock absorber. Torque bracket bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fit the shock absorber bracket to the body and torque to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber to the steering swivel member. Torque retaining bolts to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rear wheels. Torque wheel nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Upper mounting bolt in trunk. Cut out a flap in the carpeting to access the mounting bolt and bushings.Nut, washer and bushing from the mounting pointRear wheelLower shock mounting boltShock

    Upper mounting bolt in trunk. Cut out a flap in the carpeting to access the mounting bolt and bushings.
     
    Nut, washer and bushing from the mounting point
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt
     
    Shock
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Shock to the upper mounting. Be sure to install the lower part of the bushing on the shockLower shock mounting bolt and torque the bolt to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)Rear wheelUpper bushing, washer and nut and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)Carpeting

    Shock to the upper mounting. Be sure to install the lower part of the bushing on the shock
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt and torque the bolt to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Upper bushing, washer and nut and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Carpeting
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper mounting bolt in trunk. Cut out a flap in the carpeting to access the mounting bolt and bushings.
     
    Nut, washer and bushing from the mounting point
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt
     
    Shock
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock to the upper mounting. Be sure to install the lower part of the bushing on the shock
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt and torque the bolt to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Upper bushing, washer and nut and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Carpeting
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the weight on the lower suspension arm with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Clean, lubricate and remove the bolts which holds the shock absorber to the steering swivel member.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber bracket from the body and lift the shock absorber out.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bracket from the shock absorber.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the bracket to the shock absorber. Torque bracket bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fit the shock absorber bracket to the body and torque to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber to the steering swivel member. Torque retaining bolts to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rear wheels. Torque wheel nuts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Spring bracket lower bolts and loosen the upper bolts
     
    Lower shock absorber retaining bolt
     
    Shock absorber and spring assembly and loosen the lock nut
     

  4.  
  5. Press the spring bracket down to relieve the load. Remove the center nut, washer and bushing. If necessary, use a spring compressor tool 88 18 791.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Spring, spacer ring and bracket on the shock absorber
     
    Press the bracket down to relieve the shock absorber load and install the bushing and washer
     
    New locknut and torque the nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     
    Shock absorber and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Lower mounting bolt on the rear axle and torque the bolt to 140 ft. lbs. (190 Nm)
     
    Rear wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
