CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Ensure the wheels are pointing straight ahead.

  7. Remove the airbag from the steering wheel (2), 2 plugs and screws (2).
  8.  
  9. Lift out the airbag and unplug the connector.
    CAUTION
    The steering wheel often comes loose suddenly from the cone and there is a risk that the contact roller and electrical leads can fasten to the steering wheel and be damaged.

  11. Undo the steering wheel nut but leave it on the last few threads. Pull the steering wheel to this point.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nut and carefully lift off the steering wheel.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2.  
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Tighten steering wheel nut to: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  6.

  7. Remove air bag and disconnect the electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center bolt from the steering wheel and lift off the steering wheel.

  1. Make sure that the wheels are pointing straight ahead. Turn the contact roller so that the pointer is right in the middle of the indicator aperture. Fit the steering wheel on the steering shaft.
    NOTE
    Make sure the steering wheel fits the key on the steering shaft.

  3. Apply thread locking adhesive and fit the center bolt. Tighten bolt to: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install air bag.
  8.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Ensure the wheels are pointing straight ahead.

  7. Detach the airbag module from the steering wheel, 2 screws and plugs.

  9. Withdraw the airbag from the steering wheel slightly and release the connectors from the velcro fastener. Unplug the connectors (4).
  10.  
  11. Unplug the connectors (5) on the rear of the airbag.
  12.  
  13. Undo the steering wheel center nut (6) a couple of turns and pull the steering wheel to release it from the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering wheel center nut and washer.
  16.  
  17. Withdraw the steering wheel far enough to access the connector on the contact roller. Unplug the steering wheel harness connector from the contact roller. Make sure the contact roller mechanism is secure.

  19. Remove the steering wheel.
  20.  

To install:

  1. If installing a new steering wheel, transfer the steering wheel harness to the new steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Check that the cable for the contact roller is not twisted.
  4.  
  5. Hang the steering wheel on the steering shaft.
    NOTE
    Make sure the hole in the steering wheel fits over the contact roller connector and that the steering column shaft coding fits the steering wheel.

  6.  
  7. Plug in the contact roller before pushing on steering wheel. Push the steering wheel on.
  8.  
  9. Connect the horn and, if equipped, the audio system electrical connectors
  10.  
  11. Secure the connectors to the velcro fastener.
  12.  
  13. Plug in the connectors on the rear of the airbag.
  14.  
  15. Fit the airbag into the steering wheel, 2 screws and plugs.
  16.  
  17. Turn on the ignition and check the SRS and control module with the diagnostics tool as follows:

    Connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector under the dashboard. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that are present
     
    Turn the ignition off and on again. Wait at least 10 seconds with the ignition on
     
    If any diagnostic trouble codes are shown, carry out fault diagnosis in accordance with the directions given for each DTC
     
    If no diagnostic trouble codes are shown, disconnect the diagnostic tool
