Operation

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006-2008

Hyundai Veracruz 2007-2008

The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is mounted on the throttle body and detects the opening angle of the throttle plate. The TPS has a variable resistor (potentiometer) that changes in resistance characteristics according to the throttle angle. During acceleration, the TPS resistance between the reference 5-volt and the signal terminal decreases and the output voltage increases; during deceleration, the TPS resistance increases and the TPS output voltage decreases. The ECM/PCM supplies a reference 5-volt to the TPS and the output voltage increases directly with the opening of the throttle valve. The TPS output voltage will vary from 0.2-0.8 volts at Closed Throttle (CT) to 4.3-4.8 volts at Wide Open Throttle (WOT). The ECM/PCM determines operating conditions such as idle (closed throttle), part load, acceleration/deceleration, and wide-open throttle from the TPS. Also the ECM/PCM uses the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor signal along with the TPS signal to adjust fuel injection duration and ignition timing.

Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006-2008

Hyundai Veracruz 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the TPS retaining screws.
  8.
  9. Remove the TPS from its mounting.
  10.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.

Testing

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006-2008

Hyundai Veracruz 2007-2008

  1. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) output voltage should vary from 0.2-0.8 volts at Closed Throttle (CT).
  2.
  3. The TPS should vary from 4.3-4.8 volts at Wide Open Throttle (WOT).
  4.
  5. Check the signal waveform compared to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) waveform as in the following illustration. The waveform should coincide.
  6.
  7. The throttle angle should match the output voltage as in the specification table.
  8.
  9. If the TPS does not meet specifications, replace the TPS.
