Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Engine removal is not required for this procedure.

  2.  
  3. Remove the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Install a set pin after compressing the balance shaft chain tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the balance shaft chain tensioner (A).
  8.  
  9. Remove the balance shaft chain tensioner arm (B).
  10.  
  11. Remove the balance shaft chain guide (C).

  13. Remove the balance shaft module (A) and balance shaft chain (B).

To install:

  1. The key of the crankshaft should be aligned with the mating face of the main bearing cap. This will place the piston of the No. 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.
  2.  
  3. Confirm the balance shaft module timing mark.
    NOTE
    The timing marks should be visually aligned with the centers of adjacent cast timing notches.

  4.  
  5. Install the balance shaft module so that the timing mark of the balance shaft module sprocket is matched with the timing mark (color link) of the balance shaft chain.

  6.  
  7. Tighten the balance shaft module retaining bolts:
    1. Step 1: 12 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Add 60°.
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Add another 60° on the last pass.

  9. Install the balance shaft chain guide (C). Tighten to 87-104 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the balance shaft tensioner arm (B). Tighten to 87-104 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the balance shaft tensioner (A) and remove the set pin. Tighten to 87-104 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Confirm the timing marks.

  17. Install the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets, removal & installation.
