Inspection



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the relief plunger: Remove the plug (A), spring (B), and relief plunger (C).

  5. Inspect the relief plunger.
    1. Coat the plunger with engine oil
    2.  
    3. Check that it falls smoothly into the plunger hole by its own weight.
    4.  
    5. If it does not, replace the relief plunger.
    6.  
    7. If necessary, replace the front case.
    8.

  7. Inspect the relief valve spring.
  8.  
  9. Inspect for a distorted or broken relief valve spring.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the rotor side clearance.
    1. Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straight edge.
    2.  
    3. If the side clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotors as a set. If necessary, replace the front case.

  13. Inspect the rotor tip clearance.
    1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the tip clearance between the inner and outer rotor tips.
    2.  
    3. If the tip clearance is greater than specified, replace the rotors as a set.

  15. Inspect the rotor body clearance, as follows:
    1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the outer rotor and body.
    2.  
    3. If the body clearance is greater than specified, replace the rotors as a set. If necessary, replace the front case.
    4.

  17. Install the relief plunger and spring into the front case hole.
  18.  
  19. Install the plug. Tighten to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
  20.  

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Timing belt
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil screen and gasket
     
    Oil pressure switch
     
    Oil filter bracket and gasket
     

  6.  
  7. Using Tool 09213-33000, remove the plug cap from the oil pump portion of the case.

    Plug from the left side of the block and insert a 0.32 inch (8mm) screwdriver into the plug hole. The screwdriver must be inserted at least 2 1 / 2 inches (60mm).

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump gears.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the tip clearance of the gears using a feeler gauge. The specifications are as follows:
    1. Standard value drive gear: 0.0063-0.0083 inch (0.16-0.21mm).
    2.  
    3. Standard value driven gear: 0.0071-0.0083 inch (0.18-0.21mm).
    4.  
    5. Limit drive gear: 0.0098 inch (0.25mm).
    6.  
    7. Limit driven gear: 0.0098 inch (0.25mm).
    8.

  5. Inspect the side clearance of the gears using a feeler gauge. The specifications are as follows:
    1. Standard value drive gear: 0.0031-0.0055 inch (0.08-0.14mm).
    2.  
    3. Standard value driven gear: 0.0024-0.0047 inch (0.06-0.12mm).
    4.  
    5. Limit drive gear: 0.0098 inch (0.25mm).
    6.  
    7. Limit driven gear: 0.0098 inch (0.25mm).
    8.

  7. Apply engine oil to both gears and align the gear timing marks.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump case.
  10.  
  11. Using crankshaft front oil seal install Tool 09214-32000, install the oil seal into the case.

  13. Place special tool 09214-32100 on the front of the crankshaft and apply a coat of oil to the outside of the tool to aid in case installation.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    New front case gasket and temporarily tighten the flange bolts
     
    Front case and tighten the bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm), making sure the correct length bolt is installed in the correct location

  17. Insert a 0.32 inch (8mm) screwdriver into the plug hole. The screwdriver must be inserted at least 2 1 / 2 inches (60mm). Verify that the shaft is in place and install the bolt.
  18.  
  19. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring on the groove on the front case
     
    Plug case and tighten to 14-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm)
     
    Oil screen and gasket
     
    Oil pan
     
    Oil pressure switch using a 24mm deep socket. Apply Three Bond® 1104 sealant to the threads before installation and tighten to 72-108 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm)
     
    Timing belt
     
    Negative battery cable

  21. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  24.  

2.7L Engines

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower oil pan, refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the RH front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the RH side cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Turn the crankshaft and align the white groove on the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the lower cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil screen:
    1. Remove the 2 bolts (B).
    2.  
    3. Remove the oil screen (A) and gasket.

  19. Remove the upper oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump case.
    1. Remove the screws from the pump housing, then separate the housing and cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove the inner and outer rotors.

To install:

  1. Place the inner and outer rotors into the front case with the marks facing the oil pump cover side.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump cover to front case with the 8 screws. Tighten to 72-108 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Check that the oil pump turns freely.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pump on the cylinder block.
    1. Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old liquid gasket from the gasket surfaces and sealing grooves.
    2.  
    3. Using a non-residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces.
    4.  
    5. Apply liquid gasket to the oil pump as shown in the illustration. Use liquid gasket MS 721-40A or equivalent.

    7. To prevent leakage of oil, apply liquid gasket to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
    8.  
    9. Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the residue.
    10.  
    11. Place a new O-ring on the cylinder block.
    12.  
    13. Engage the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear with large teeth of the crankshaft, and slide the oil pump on the crankshaft.
    14.  
    15. Install the oil pump with 5 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes. Tighten to 108-132 inch lbs. (12-15 Nm).
    16.

  9. Apply a light coat of oil to the seal lip.
  10.  
  11. Using the special tool (09214-33000), install the oil seal.

  13. Install the upper oil pan.
    1. Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing material from the gasket surfaces.
    2.  
    3. Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry before applying liquid gasket.
    4.  
    5. Install the oil pan with the 17 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes using the pattern illustrated. Tightening torque:
      NOTE
      To prevent leakage of oil, apply liquid gasket to the inner threads of the bolt holes.


      NOTE
      Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the residue.



      Bolts 1-15: 168-204 inch lbs. (19-24 Nm)
       
      Bolts 16-17: 48-60 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm)

  15. Install the oil screen with a new gasket and the 2 bolts. Tighten to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the lower oil pan.
    1. Apply liquid gasket as an even bead, centered between the edges of the mating surface. Use liquid gasket MS 721-40A or equivalent.
    2.  
    3. To prevent leakage of oil, apply liquid gasket to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
    4.  
    5. Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the residue.
    6.  
    7. Install the lower oil pan 10 bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts several passes. Tighten to 84-108 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
    8.

  19. Install the timing belt.
  20.  
  21. Install the accessory drive belt.
  22.  
  23. Install the alternator.
  24.  
  25. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  26.  
  27. Install the RH front wheel.
  28.  
  29. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil to allow the gasket material to cure.
  30.  
  31. Fill the engine with oil.
  32.  
  33. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  34.  
  35. Recheck the engine oil level.
  36.  

3.3L & 3.8L Engines

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2007-2008

Hyundai Veracruz 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower oil pan, refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pump chain cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump chain sprocket (A).
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump using a new O-ring. Tighten the bolts to 15-17 ft. lbs. (21-23 Nm).
    NOTE
    Always use a new O-ring.

  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump sprocket and oil pump chain on the oil pump. Tighten to 14-16 ft. lbs. (19-22 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump chain cover. Tighten to 84-108 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, removal & installation.
  8.  
  9. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil to allow the gasket material to cure.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.  
  15. Recheck the engine oil level.
  16.  

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Hyundai Santa Fe 2006

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pressure switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil filter and pans.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil screen and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil filter bracket and gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil relief valve plug from the pump case.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pump case.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump gears.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the side clearance of the gears using a feeler gauge. The specifications are as follows:
    1. Standard body clearance: 0.0039-0.0071 inch (0.100-0.181mm).
    2.  
    3. Standard side clearance: 0.0016-0.0037 inch (0.040-0.095mm).
    4.  
    5. Oil tip clearance: 0.0024-0.0071 inch (0.06-0.18mm).
    6.

  5. Install the oil pump case with a new gasket. Tighten the bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm) and the screw to 72-108 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install a new oil seal into the pump as tightly as possible.
  8.  
  9. Using crankshaft front oil seal install Tool 09214-33000, install the oil seal into the case.
  10.  
  11. Install the relief plunger and spring and tighten the valve plug to 29-36 ft. lbs. (40-50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the oil screen and a new gasket.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pans and filter.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  22.
