  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the rear brake shoe clearance:
    1. Remove the plug from the disc.
    2.  
    3. Rotate the toothed wheel of adjuster with a screw driver until the disc is not moving.
    4.  
    5. Back off 5 notches in the opposite direction.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes, Brake Caliper, removal & installation.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes, Rotor, removal & installation.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clip retainer and the parking brake cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shoe hold down pin (A) and spring (B) by pressing and rotating the spring.

  15. Remove the adjuster assembly (B) and the lower return spring (A).
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper return spring (C) and the brake shoes (D).
  18.  
  19. Remove the operating lever assembly (E).

To install:

  1. Install the operating lever assembly (E).
  2.  
  3. Install the upper return spring (C) and the brake shoes (D).
  4.  
  5. Install the adjuster assembly (B) and the lower return spring (A).
  6.  
  7. Install the shoe hold down pin and spring by pressing and rotating the spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the parking brake cable and then install the clip.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear brake disc rotor. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes, Rotor, removal & installation.
  12.  
  13. Adjust the rear brake shoe clearance:
    1. Remove the plug from the disc.
    2.  
    3. Rotate the toothed wheel of adjuster with a screw driver until the disc is not moving.
    4.  
    5. Back off 5 notches in the opposite direction.
    6.

  15. Install the brake caliper. Refer to Rear Disc Brakes, Brake Caliper, removal & installation.
  16.  
  17. Install the tire and wheel.
  18.  
  19. If the parking brake shoe or the brake disc are replaced with a new one, perform the brake shoe brake-in procedure:
    1. While operating the parking brake engaged with a 15 lb. (69 N) effort, drive the vehicle 0.31 miles (500 meters) at the speed of about 37 mph (60 kph).
    2.  
    3. Repeat the above procedure at least 2 times.
    4.

  21. The parking brake must be able to operate at 220 lbs. (981 N) with no difficulty.
  22.  
  23. The parking brake should hold on a 30 percent grade.

  25. Ensure that all parts move smoothly.
  26.  
  27. The parking brake indicator lamp must turn ON when the parking brake is applied and turn OFF when the parking brake is released.
