REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1991-95 Models

See Figure 1

The EBCM is located under the instrument panel, to the left of the steering column. The module is outboard of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), closest to the left kick panel.

If replacing the control module with a service replacement, the Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) of the new module must be programmed by the Saturn Service Stall or equivalent system.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the CPA device and unplug the 2-way connector from the EBCM.
  4.
  5. Unplug the 32-way electrical connector from the EBCM.
  6.
  7. Rotate the module retaining screw 1 / 4 turn and remove the module by pulling downward. Be careful not to snag the wiring.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the EBCM into the bracket, taking care not to snag the wiring.
  2.
  3. Seat the retaining screw by pushing upward 2 clicks.
  4.
  5. Connect the wiring and insert the CPA device onto the 2-way connector.
  6.
  7. If necessary, program the EEPROM.

1996-98 Models

See Figure 2

The ABS control module is located under the instrument panel top cover, directly over the steering column. The ABS control module and PCM are mounted in the same bracket.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Using a small, flat bladed screwdriver, pry off the upper instrument panel pad screw caps. Remove the trim panel retaining screws.
  4.
  5. Disengage the rear trim panel clips by lifting up. Then, disengage the front trim panel clips by lifting up at each outer corner and pulling rearward. Be careful not to damage the trim panel during its removal from the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Remove the upper trim panel insulator.
  8.
  9. Loosen the ABS module mounting nut at the crossbeam, and lift the control module upward towards the windshield to disengage it from the ABS/PCM mounting bracket.
  10.
  11. Disengage the ABS module wiring connectors and remove the module from the vehicle.
  12.

To install:
  1. Plug in the ABS module electrical connectors and lower the module into position in the mounting bracket. Guide the attachment stud into the slot in the crossbeam.
  2.
  3. Install and tighten the mounting nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). It is extremely important to tighten the mounting nut to the correct torque specification, or damage to the ABS module can result.
  4.
  5. Install the instrument panel insulator pad and upper trim panel assembly. Be sure that all flaps are tucked and clips engaged. Install and tighten the retaining screws to 20 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm). Install the trim panel screw caps.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
