Instrument Cluster

The gauges located in the instrument cluster (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, voltmeter and coolant temperature gauge) are not serviceable. The entire cluster must be replaced as an assembly.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1991-94 Models

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 instrument panel top cover screw caps and screws. Carefully remove the cover by lifting at the rear edge to disengage the retaining clips and by sliding the panel out of the windshield clips.
  4.  
  5. Carefully remove the center air outlet/trim panel by pulling outward at the clip locations. Start at the bottom and move upward. Do not use tools that might damage the trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Open the glove box, then remove the 4 cluster trim panel attaching screws from the top of the panel.
  8.  
  9. Carefully pull the cluster trim panel rearward to disengage it from the retainers, then remove the CPA device and unplug the electrical connectors from the instrument panel lighting and rear window defogger switches. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument cluster retaining screws, then pull the cluster out sufficiently to unplug the electrical connectors. Unplug the connectors by depressing the retainer legs and remove the assembly.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect the wiring harnesses to the instrument cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Verify that the connectors for the instrument panel lighting and rear window defogger switches are properly positioned, then install the instrument cluster assembly and retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Position the cluster trim panel and engage the electrical connectors to the panel lighting and rear defogger switches, then install the CPA devices.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster trim panel into the retainers, then secure using the retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the center air outlet/trim panel by pushing at the clip locations.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear of the instrument panel top cover into the windshield clips and snap the panel into position. Install the upper panel screws and screw caps.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.

1995-98 Models

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the air bag system, as described earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower steering column filler panel mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the hood release cable from the lever and remove the steering column filler panel.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the ignition switch electrical connector at the right steering column bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column bolts and lower the column onto the front seat.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster fasteners and pull back the trim bezel at the clip locations.
  14.  
  15. Disengage the dimmer switch connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) devices and disengage the wiring connectors from the cluster assembly by squeezing the lock tabs on each side of the connectors.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting screws and lift the instrument cluster assembly out of the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the instrument cluster assembly into the dashboard and fasten the mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Reattach the wiring connectors behind the cluster assembly and install the CPA devices.
  4.  
  5. Attach the dimmer switch connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster trim bezel. Push in at the clip locations.
  8.  
  9. Raise the steering column into position and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach the ignition switch connector. Install the hood release cable to the lever.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower steering column filler panel and tighten the mounting screws.
  14.  
  15. Arm the air bag system.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
