REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1991-94 Models

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, tape the shift button in on the shifter handle.
  4.  
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the gear shift knob by pulling straight upward.
  6.  
  7. Remove the liner from the center console-s rear storage compartment, then remove both rear compartment screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 screws from the front sides of the console.
  10.  
  11. Apply the parking brake, then remove the parking brake filler panel by carefully lifting at the rear edge.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ashtray, then unclip the ashtray bulb holder.
  14.  
  15. If equipped, remove the power window/mirror switch by sliding it forward, then lifting at the rear edge. Remove the CPA devices and unplug the electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left and right lower trim panel extensions by disconnecting the Velcro at the bottom of the panels and pulling them out of the upper retaining clips.
  18.  
  19. Lift the back of the console sufficiently to reach underneath and push out the seat belt bezels. Feed the seat belts though the cutouts and remove the console from the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the console while feeding the seat belts and wire harness through the console cut outs. Snap the seat belt bezels into position.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, connect the power window/mirror electrical wiring harnesses and install the CPA devices, then install the switch by inserting the front edge first and snapping the rear of the switch into the console.
  4.  
  5. Install the ashtray bulb holder, then install the ashtray to the console.
  6.  
  7. Secure the console using the side screws at the front, and the compartment screws at the top rear of the console. Position the liner into the rear storage compartment and over the screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the parking brake filler panel by pressing down at the clip locations.
  10.  
  11. Install the left and right lower trim panel extension.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with a manual transaxle, push the shift knob onto the shifter.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the tape from the shifter button.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

1995-98 Models

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disable the air bag system.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove the retaining fasteners and center armrest from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Apply the parking brake, then remove the mounting screw and lift the cover straight off of the brake lever.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, place the shifter in the Neutral position. Lift the ashtray straight out of the cup holder.
  8.  
  9. Starting at the rear edge, pull upwards to remove the cup holder from the console.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ashtray bulb socket by lifting the tab and sliding it forward. Then, pull the socket straight out.
  12.  
  13. Remove the wiring harness from the cup holder.
  14.  
  15. If equipped, remove the power window/mirror switch by sliding forward, then lifting at the rear edge. Unplug the electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. If not equipped with a center armrest, lift out the rear screw cover and remove both rear console screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left and right lower trim panel extensions by disconnecting the Velcro at the bottom of the panels and pulling them out of the retaining clips.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front console mounting screws and move the console unit rearward.
  22.  
  23. Disengage the cigarette lighter electrical connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cigarette lighter bulb socket by rotating it clockwise and pulling straight out.
  26.  
  27. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, tape the gear shift button in to clear the shifter opening.
  28.  
  29. Lift the back of the console. Move the console back and lift straight up to remove the console from the vehicle.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Place the shifter in the Neutral position. Lower the front of the console unit over the shifter.
  2.  
  3. Install the wire harness connectors through the console cutouts into the correct position.
  4.  
  5. Lower the rear console over the parking brake lever and onto the rear mounting pad.
  6.  
  7. Move the console rearward and install the cigarette lighter bulb socket through the opening, rotating it counterclockwise.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cigarette lighter electrical harness.
  10.  
  11. Move the console forward into position. Engage the front console upper tabs to the sheet metal on the lower instrument panel brace. Install and tighten the front console mounting screws to 11 inch lbs. (1.2 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the left and right lower trim panel extensions.
  14.  
  15. If not equipped with a center armrest, install both the rear console screws. Tighten the screws to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm). Install the screw cover.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, connect the power window/mirror electrical wiring harnesses, then install the switch by inserting the front edge first and snapping the rear of the switch into the console.
  18.  
  19. Insert the bulb socket into the cup holder, pushing down to engage the locking tab. Install the wiring harness to the cup holder.
  20.  
  21. Install the cup holder into the console by pushing straight down, then install the ashtray.
  22.  
  23. Install the parking brake cover over the lever. Tighten the screw to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm). Be very careful not to overtighten the screw or it will pull through the cover.
  24.  
  25. If equipped, install the center arm rest. Tighten the mounting screws to 14 inch lbs. (1.6 Nm).
  26.  
  27. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the tape from the shifter button.
  28.  
  29. Enable the air bag system. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.
