Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Windshield wiper arms
     
    Outer cowl top panel
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Transmission control cable and bracket
     
    Transmission wiring connectors
     
    Front wheel
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    Transaxle oil cooler hose

  7. At this point, attach an engine crane to support the engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove the halfshaft heat insulator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter.
  12.  
  13. Support the transaxle assembly with a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Left-hand engine mounting bracket
     
    Rear engine mount and bracket
     
    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Flywheel housing cover
     

  16.  
  17. Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 torque converter mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 7 transaxle mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the automatic transaxle from the engine.

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle assembly to the engine. Tighten the 7 mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the 6 torque converter mounting bolts. Tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel housing cover
     
    Rear engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Rear engine mount. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Left-hand engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Starter
     
    Halfshaft heat insulator. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly
     
    Transaxle oil cooler hose
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front wheel
     
    Transaxle wiring connectors
     
    Transaxle control cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Outer cowl top panel
     
    Wiper arms
     
    Hood
     
    Negative battery
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the transaxle with fluid to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Hood
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Battery and battery carrier
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Transaxle control cables
     
    Transaxle wiring connectors
     
    Breather plug hose
     
    Transaxle control cable brackets
     
    Transaxle oil filler tube
     
    Front wheel
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Transaxle oil cooler hoses

  7. At this point, attach an engine crane to support the engine.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both halfshafts
     
    Starter
     

  10.  
  11. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front engine mount
     
    Rear engine mount
     
    Center engine crossmember
     
    Left engine mount and bracket
     
    Front engine mounting bracket from the transaxle
     
    Rear engine mounting bracket from the transaxle
     
    Flywheel housing cover
     

  14.  
  15. Turn the crankshaft to remove the 6 torque converter mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 7 transaxle mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transaxle assembly from the engine.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle. Tighten the bolts as follows:
    1. Bolt A: 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolt B: 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Bolts C: 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    6.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter mounting bolts. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Flywheel housing cover
     
    Rear engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Front engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Left engine mounting bracket. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Left engine mount
     
    Center engine crossmember
     
    Rear engine mount
     
    Front engine mount
     
    Starter
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Front wheel
     
    Transaxle oil cooler hoses
     
    Transaxle control cable support brackets
     
    Transaxle oil filler tube
     
    Breather plug hose
     
    Transaxle wiring connectors
     
    Transaxle control cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery carrier and battery
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Hood
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the transaxle with fluid to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
