Overhaul



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the inner joint boot clamps.
  4.  
  5. Slide the inner joint boot down the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the inner joint and outer joint shaft.

  9. Remove the inner joint from the outer joint shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shaft snap ring.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the outer joint shaft and tripod joint.

  15. Tap out the tripod joint from the outboard joint shaft.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inner joint boot.
  18.  
  19. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the damper.
  20.  
  21. Remove the outer joint boot clamps.
  22.  
  23. Remove the outer joint boot.
  24.  
  25. Remove the shaft hole snap ring.
  26.  
  27. Using Special Tool 09950-00020, press out the left side dust cover.
  28.  
  29. Using a suitable press, press out the right side dust cover.
  30.  
  31. Using a suitable pry tool, remove the bearing case snap ring.
  32.  
  33. Press out the bearing case and remove the straight pin.
  34.  
  35. Using Special Tool, 09527-10011, press out the halfshaft bearing.

To install:

  1. Using Special Tool 09950-60020, press in a new halfshaft bearing.
  2.  
  3. Install a new bearing case snap ring.
  4.  
  5. Using Special Tool 09527-10011, press the halfshaft bearing case to the inner joint.
  6.  
  7. Install a new shaft hole snap ring.
  8.  
  9. Press in a new dust cover using Special Tool 09726-40010.

    Fig. When installing the new dust cover, distance (A) should be less than 0.039 in. (1 mm).

  11. Using Special Tool 09527-10011, press in a new right side dust cover until the distance from the tip of the center shaft to the dust cover reaches 3.582-3.622 in. (91-92 mm).

  13. Press in a new left side dust cover.
  14.  
  15. Install a new shaft hole snap ring.
    NOTE
    Wrap the splines of the halfshaft with vinyl tape to avoid damage to the outer boot.

  17. Install the outer joint boot to the halfshaft. Pack the boot with 6.7-7.1 oz. of the kit supplied grease.
  18.  
  19. Install outer boot clamps. The clearance of the boot clamps should measure 0.031 in. (0.8 mm) or less when fully tightened.

    Fig. Boot clamp clearance should be less than 0.031 in. when installed.

  21. If equipped with automatic transmission, install the halfshaft damper. Damper should be 7.969-8.126 in. (202.4-206.4 mm) from the outside of the joint bearing case.
    NOTE
    Wrap the splines of the halfshaft with vinyl tape to avoid damage to the inner boot.

  23. Install the inner boot and boot clamps to the halfshaft.
  24.  
  25. Place the beveled side of the tripod axial spline toward the outer joint.
  26.  
  27. Align the matchmarks made during removal.
  28.  
  29. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap the tripod joint onto the halfshaft.
  30.  
  31. Pack the inner boot with 6.2-6.5 oz. of the kit supplied grease.
  32.  
  33. Install a new shaft snap ring.
  34.  
  35. Align the matchmarks of the inner joint case to the halfshaft.
  36.  
  37. Install the inner joint boot clamps.
