Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation




WARNING
This procedure requires you to suspend the engine using the proper engine lifting and holding equipment. Do not attempt this procedure unless you have the proper equipment.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood.
  6.  
  7. Suspend the engine assembly.
  8.  
  9. Separate the lower control arms. Refer to the procedure in this section for details.
  10.  
  11. Separate the stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Separate the power steering link.
  14.  
  15. Separate the pressure feed tube.
  16.  
  17. Separate the front suspension crossmember sub-.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 4 bolts and the 2 bushings from the stabilizer bar bracket, then remove the front stabilizer bar.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer bar, the 2 bushings, and the brackets and secure with the 4 bolts. Tighten to 27 ft. lbs. (327 Nm).
    NOTE
    Install the bushings with the slit facing to the rear side of the vehicle. Install the bushings on the outside of each paint line.

  3. Connect the front suspension crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Connect the pressure feed tube.
  6.  
  7. Connect the power steering link.
  8.  
  9. Connect the stabilizer bar.
  10.  
  11. Connect the lower control arms.
  12.  
  13. Install front wheel, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the hood, making sure it is aligned correctly.
  16.  
  17. Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  18.  

  1. Place front wheels facing straight ahead
  2.  
  3. Remove the column hole cover silencer sheet.
  4.  
  5. Separate the steering intermediate shaft.
  6.  
  7. Separate the steering column hole cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheels
  10.  
  11. Remove the left and right engine under covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove front stabilizer links:
    1. Remove the 2 nuts and front stabilizer link.
      NOTE
      Use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold the stud if the ball joint turns together with the nut.

  15. Inspect the stabilizer link as follows:
    1. Secure the front stabilizer link in a vise.
    2.  
    3. Install the nut to the stud bolt.
    4.  
    5. Flip the ball joint back and forth 5 times or more.
    6.  
    7. Use a torque wrench to turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn. Take the torque reading on the 5th turn. The turning torque should be 8.9 inch lbs. (1 Nm) or less. If not, replace the link.

    9. Check the dust boots for cracks or grease leakage.

  17. Separate the tie rod ends.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the pressure feed tube.
  20.  
  21. Separate the lower control arms.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front floor panel brace.
  24.  
  25. Remove the center exhaust pipe.
  26.  
  27. Remove the hood.
  28.  
  29. Remove the engine cover.
  30.  
  31. Suspend the engine assembly with the suitable equipment.
  32.  
  33. Remove the no.1 hook.
  34.  
  35. Remove the front suspension crossmember.
  36.  
  37. Remove the stabilizer bracket bolts and the brackets.

  39. Remove the 2 front stabilizer bar bushings from the stabilizer bar.
  40.  
  41. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2.  
  3. Install front stabilizer bar bushings:
    1. Install the bushing to the outer side of the stopper on the stabilizer bar.
      NOTE
      Place the cutout of the stabilizer bushing facing the rear side.

  5. Install the stabilizer bracket to the front suspension crossmember with the 2 bolts, and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).

  7. Install the stabilizer brackets.
  8.  
  9. Install the front suspension crossmember.
  10.  
  11. Install the no.1 hook.
  12.  
  13. Connect the lower control arms.
  14.  
  15. Install the stabilizer links with the retaining nuts and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
    NOTE
    Use a 6mm hex wrench to hold the stud if the ball joint turns together with the nut.

  17. Connect pressure feed tube.
  18.  
  19. Connect the tie rod end.
  20.  
  21. Install the center exhaust pipe.
  22.  
  23. Install the front floor panel brace.
  24.  
  25. Install the front wheels
  26.  
  27. Connect the steering column hole cover.
  28.  
  29. Connect the steering intermediate shaft.
  30.  
  31. Install the column hole cover silencer sheet
  32.  
  33. Install the engine cover.
  34.  
  35. Add power steering fluid, then bleed the power steering system, as outlined in this section.
  36.  
  37. Check power steering fluid level in reservoir and add if necessary.
  38.  
  39. Check for fluid leaks
  40.  
  41. Install the hood. Check to make sure the hood is aligned properly.
  42.  
  43. Check and adjust front wheel alignment.
  44.  
  45. Install the engine under covers.
  46.
