Ignition Lock Cylinder

Removal & Installation



TC
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel and steering column switches, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Turn back the floor carpet and remove the 2 clips and the column hole cover silencer sheet.
  6.  
  7. Separate steering intermediate shaft no.2, as follows:
    1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft No.2 and the steering intermediate shaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove bolt and separate the steering intermediate shaft No.2 from the steering intermediate shaft.
    4.

  9. Remove the steering column as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connectors and the wire harness clamps from the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering column.
    4.

  11. Remove steering intermediate shaft no.2
    1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft No.2 and steering main shaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft No.2.
    4.

  13. Remove transponder key amplifier, as follows:
    1. Widen the claw hung onto the upper bracket by approximately 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) using a screwdriver.
    2.  
    3. Pull the transponder key amplifier towards the rear of the vehicle with the claw open.
      NOTE
      Do not use excessive force to prevent the case from being damaged.

  15. Remove steering column upper w/ switch bracket assembly:
    1. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
    2.  
    3. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolt heads.
    4.  
    5. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts, steering column upper w/ switch bracket and steering column clamp upper.
    6.

  17. Remove the steering main shaft as follows:
    1. Secure the steering column tube in a vise. Insert aluminum plates between the steering column tube and the vise to prevent damage.
      NOTE
      Do not overtighten the vise.

    2.  
    3. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (outer side).
    4.  
    5. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove the steering main shaft and steering main shaft bearing.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to drop the steering main shaft.

    6.  
    7. Using a snap ring expander, remove the steering main shaft snap ring (inner side).
    8.

  19. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder in the ACC position.
    2.  
    3. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Make sure the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the ACC position.
    2.  
    3. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    4.

  3. Check the steering lock operation:
    1. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
    2.  
    3. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.
      NOTE
      If there is any abnormality, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder.

  5. Check that the steering column tube bearing rotates smoothly without looseness in the axial direction or any irregular noise.
    NOTE
    Replace the steering column if the bearing does not rotate as specified.

  7. Install the steering main shaft as follows:
    1. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (inner side) to the steering main shaft.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering main shaft to the steering column tube.
    4.  
    5. Secure the steering column tube in a vise. Insert aluminum plates between the steering column tube and the vise to prevent damage.
      NOTE
      Do not apply excessive force to the steering column tube bracket when holding the steering column tube in a vise. Do not drop the steering main shaft.

    6.  
    7. Using a snap ring expander, install a new steering main shaft snap ring (outer side) to the steering main shaft.
    8.

  9. Install the steering main shaft bearing, as follows:
    1. Hold the steering column tube in a vise between aluminum plates.
      NOTE
      Do not apply excessive force to the steering column tube bracket when holding the steering column tube in a vise.

  11. Install a new steering main shaft bearing to the steering column tube using SST 09612-2201 1 and a hammer.
  12.  
  13. Install steering column upper w/ switch bracket, as follows:
    1. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/ switch bracket and steering column upper clamp with 2 new tapered-head bolts.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
    4.

  15. Install the transponder key amplifier:
    1. Align the transponder key amplifier with the installation position of the upper bracket with the amplifier inclined.
    2.  
    3. Push on the transponder key amplifier and install it to the upper bracket.
      WARNING
      Do not push the amplifier with excessive force.

  17. Install steering intermediate shaft no.2, as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft No.2 and the steering main shaft and install them with bolt. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  19. Install the steering column with the 3 bolts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Connect each connector and clamp the wire harness to the steering column bracket.

  21. Align the matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft No.2 and the steering intermediate shaft and install them with bolt. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  23. Install the steering column switches and steering wheel, as outlined in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.

  3. Remove the steering wheel and steering column switches, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the clip and the steering column hole cover plate.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect steering intermediate shaft, as follows:
    1. Put matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt, and then disconnect the steering intermediate shaft.
    4.

  9. Remove the steering intermediate shaft, as follows:
    1. Put matchmarks on the main shaft and steering intermediate shaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft.
    4.

  11. Remove steering column as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column .
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and steering column.

  13. Remove the steering column upper w/switch bracket, as follows:

  15. Remove the upper steering column clamp.
  16.  
  17. Use a screwdriver and hammer, to tap out the steering main shaft bush.

  19. Remove steering main shaft as follows:
    1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the upper side.
    2.  
    3. Using an extension bar and hammer, remove the steering main shaft.
    4.  
    5. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring on the lower side.
    6.

  21. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Place the ignition switch lock cylinder in the ACC position.
    2.  
    3. Push down the stop pin with a screwdriver, and pull out the cylinder.

  23. Remove the un-lock warning switch as follows:
    1. Disconnect the un-lock warning switch connector from the ignition or starter switch .
    2.  
    3. Remove the un-lock warning switch.
    4.

  25. Remove the 2 screws and the ignition or starter switch from the steering column bracket.

To install:

  1. Install the ignition or starter switch to the steering column bracket with the 2 screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the un-lock warning switch and attach the connector to the ignition or starter switch.
    WARNING
    When attaching the wire harness, do not tighten the clamp too much or you may damage the wire harness inside.

  5. Using a new clamp, fix the wire harness of the unlock warning switch to the steering column bracket as shown in the illustration.

  7. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder as follows:
    1. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder is in the ACC position.
    2.  
    3. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    4.

  9. Inspect steering lock operation, as follows:
    1. Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed.
    2.  
    3. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position.
    4.

  11. Install steering main shaft as follows:
    1. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the lower side.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering main shaft.
    4.  
    5. Using a snap ring expander, install a new snap ring to the upper side.
    6.

  13. Install the steering main shaft bushing:
    1. Coat a new steering main shaft bush with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09612-2201 1 and a hammer, tap in the steering main shaft bushing.
    4.

  15. Install the steering column upper w/switch bracket as follows:
    1. Temporarily install the steering column upper w/switch bracket and steering column clamp upper with 2 new steering lock set bolts.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the 2 steering lock set bolts until the bolt heads break off.
    4.

  17. Install the steering column, as follows:
    1. Install the steering column from the front side, and install the steering column clamp to the instrumental reinforcement.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering column with the bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Attach the connectors and wire harness clamps.
    6.

  19. Install steering intermediate shaft as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the main shaft and steering intermediate shaft .
    2.  
    3. Install the steering intermediate shaft with the bolt and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
      NOTE
      Install the intermediate shaft with the paint marking facing the steering column side.

      Fig. Align the matchmarks on the main shaft and steering intermediate shaft. Install the intermediate shaft with the paint mark facing the steering column and tighten the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  21. Connect steering intermediate shaft as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and steering intermediate shaft .
    2.  
    3. Connect the steering intermediate shaft with the bolt and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).

  23. Install the steering column hole cover plate with the clip.

  25. Install the steering column switches and steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
