Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding to disarm the SRS system.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the vehicle-s front wheels are facing straight ahead
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove lower and upper steering column covers
    NOTE
    Tilt the steering column to the lowermost position when removing the upper steering column cover. Tilt it to the uppermost position when removing the lower steering column cover.

  9. Remove spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable subassembly.
      WARNING
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    2.  
    3. Disengage the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable subassembly.

  11. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper (multi-function) switch.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the windshield wiper switch and attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. install the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Set the turn signal switch to the neutral position.
      NOTE
      Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position or the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

    4.  
    5. Install the spiral cable sub-assembly.
      NOTE
      When replacing the spiral cable with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel.

    6.  
    7. Connect the connector to the spiral cable sub-assembly.
    8.

  5. Adjust the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Check that the ignition switch is OFF and the negative battery cable is still disconnected.
      WARNING
      After removing the terminal, wait for at least 90 seconds before starting the operation.

    3. Rotate the spiral cable counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm.
      NOTE
      Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.

  7. Rotate the spiral cable clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.
    NOTE
    Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.


    NOTE
    The spiral cable will rotate approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.

  9. Install steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. install the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding to disarm the SRS system.

  3. Make sure the vehicle-s front wheels are facing straight ahead
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 screws, then remove the lower steering column cover.

  9. Remove the 2 bolts, then remove the upper steering column cover.

  11. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, disconnect floor shift parking lock cable, as follows:
    1. With the key in the ACC position, disengage the claw and pull out the floor shift parking lock cable.

  13. Remove the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Disconnect the airbag connector and the connector from the spiral cable.
    2.  
    3. Disengage the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.

    5. Check the spiral cable for scratches or cracks on the connector and cracks, dents or chips in the spiral cable. Replace if damaged.

  15. Disconnect the connector and remove the windshield wiper switch .
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the windshield wiper switch and attach the connector.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the front wheels are still facing straight ahead
  4.  
  5. Install spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Set the turn signal switch to the neutral position.
      NOTE
      Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position since the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

    3. Engage the 3 claws and install the spiral cable.
      NOTE
      When replacing the spiral cable with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel .

    4.  
    5. Connect the airbag connector and the connector.
    6.  
    7. Install the steering column cover with the 3 screws to the spiral cable sub-.
    8.

  7. Adjust the spiral cable, as follows:
    1. Check that the ignition switch is OFF .
    2.  
    3. Check that the battery negative terminal is disconnected.
      WARNING
      Do not start the operation for 90 seconds after disconnecting the battery cable.

    5. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm.
    6.  
    7. Then rotate the spiral cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.
      NOTE
      The spiral cable sub-will rotate about 2.5 turns to both left and right of the center.

  9. Connect floor shift parking lock cable, if equipped:
    1. With the key in the ACC position, connect the floor shift parking lock cable.
    2.

  11. Check key interlock operation
  12.  
  13. Install the upper steering column cover and tighten the 2 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the lower steering column cover with the 3 screws.
  16.  
  17. Install the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
