Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Face the front wheels straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wiper arms
     
    Top cowl ventilator louvers
     
    Wiper motor and linkage
     
    Steering column hole cover plate
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the steering sliding yoke and intermediate shaft.

  11. Disconnect the sliding yoke from the intermediate shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Hood
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Lower control arms

  15. At this point, attach an engine crane to support the engine.
  16.  
  17. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Power steering rack heat insulator
     
    Intermediate shaft
     
    Steering gear assembly attached to the front crossmember.

  19. Remove the steering rack clamps and remove the steering gear from the crossmember.

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear to the crossmember. Tighten to the nuts 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Intermediate shaft
     
    Power steering rack heat insulator. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Front suspension crossmember. Tighten the front outside bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Tighten the rear outside bolts to 86 ft. lbs. (116 Nm). Tighten to inside nuts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
     
    Lower control arms
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Front wheels
     
    Sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft
     
    Hood
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Steering column hole cover plate
     
    Wiper motor and linkage
     
    Top cowl ventilator louvers
     
    Wiper arms
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the power steering reservoir to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Bleed the air from the power steering system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the alignment if necessary.
  12.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Face the front wheels straight ahead.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering column hole cover plate
     
    Intermediate steering shaft
     
    Front wheel
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Front stabilizer links
     
    Lower control arms
     
    Front floor panel brace
     
    Center exhaust pipe
     
    Hood
     
    Engine appearance cover
     

  8.  
  9. Attach an engine crane to support the engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Steering gear assembly, attached to the crossmember, from the vehicle
     
    Steering gear assembly from the crossmember

To install:

  1. Install the power steering gear assembly to the front crossmember. Tighten the mounting bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable jack, lift the front crossmember into the vehicle. Tighten as follows:
    1. Two front nuts to 98 ft. lbs (133 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Crossmember bracket: Bolt A to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm). Bolts B to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Rear engine mounting insulator bolt and nuts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arms
     
    Stabilizer links
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Tie rod ends
     
    Center exhaust pipe
     
    Front floor panel brace
     
    Front wheels
     
    Steering intermediate shaft. Tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Steering column hole cover
     
    Engine appearance cover
     
    Hood
     
    Engine undercover
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the power steering reservoir to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Bleed the air from the power steering system.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check and adjust the alignment if necessary.
  14.
