Bleeding

Print

  1. Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir and add if necessary.
  2.
  3. Jack up the front of the vehicle and support it with stands.
  4.
  5. With the engine stopped, turn the wheel slowly from lock to lock several times.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Start the engine.
  10.
  11. Run the engine at idle for a few minutes.
  12.
  13. With the engine idling, turn the wheel to the left or right full lock position and keep it there for 2 to 3 seconds, then turn the wheel to the opposite full lock position and keep it there for 2 to 3 seconds.
  14.
  15. Repeat the previous steps several times.
  16.
  17. Stop the engine.
  18.
  19. Check for foaming or emulsification. Especially, if the system has to be bled twice because of foaming or emulsification, check for fluid leaks in the system.
  20.
  21. Check the fluid level and add if necessary.
    1. Keep the vehicle level.
    2.
    3. With the engine stopped, check the fluid level in the oil reservoir.
    4.
    5. If necessary, add fluid. These models use Dexron® II or II ATF fluid.
      NOTE
When hot, check that the fluid level is within the HOT range on the oil reservoir. If the fluid is cold, check that it is within the COLD range.

    6.

  22.
  23. Start the engine and run at idle.
  24.
  25. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to raise fluid temperature. The Fluid temperature should be: 167-176°F (75-80°C).
  26.
  27. Check for foaming or emulsification. If foaming or emulsification is found, bleed the power steering system again.
  28.
  29. With the engine idling, measure the fluid level in the oil reservoir.
  30.
  31. Stop the engine.
  32.
  33. Wait a few minutes and recheck the fluid level in the oil reservoir. The maximum fluid level rise is : 5 mm (0.20 in.)
  34.
  35. If a problem is found, bleed the power steering system again.
  36.
  37. Check the fluid level and add if necessary.
