Ignition Coil Pack

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine

The electronic ignition coil pack is mounted to the cylinder head cover.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from coil pack.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug cables, twist and pull cables to remove.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil pack mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil pack.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil pack on cylinder head cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts and tighten bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Transfer spark plug cables to new coil pack. The coil pack towers are numbered with the cylinder identification. Make sure the ignition cables snap onto the towers.

2.7L Engine

The ignition system uses a coil on plug assembly and has an ignition coil for every cylinder mounted directly over each spark plug.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Use compressed air to clean area around ignition coils and spark plugs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the electrical connector from ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 fasteners from ignition coil assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil assembly for spark plug.
  2.  
  3. Install the coil screws and tighten to 55 inch lbs. (6.2 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.  

Testing



The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) regulates the individual ignition coils and checks their function via a separate diagnostic cable. A diagnostic trouble code is generated if the control module detects a faulty signal for an ignition coil.

  1. Fault symptoms may include:

    Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
     
    The engine not firing on all cylinders

The Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) can help diagnose which ignition coil is involved.
