2.7L Engine
A/C & Alternator Belt

CAUTION
Do not check belt tension with engine running.

  1. Engage a torque wrench, with a maximum 2 inch extension in the 1 / 2 inch square opening of the tensioner bracket.
  2.
  3. Apply torque, counter-clockwise to the tensioner bracket.
    1. New belts: 104 ft. lbs. (141 Nm).
    2.
    3. Used belts: 71 ft. lbs. (96 Nm).
    4.
    5. Continue to apply torque while tightening the upper fastener. Tighten the fastener to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
    6.

  4.
  5. Remove the torque wrench from tensioner bracket, and torque lower tensioner bracket fastener to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6.
  7. Verify proper belt tension
  8.

Power Steering Pump Belt

CAUTION
Do not check belt tension with engine running.

  1. Insert a 1 / 2 inch drive breaker bar into the square opening on the power steering pump bracket.
  2.
  3. Hold clockwise pressure on the power steering pump bracket and tighten the adjusting bolt.
  4.
  5. Verify proper belt tension.
  6.

Accessory drive belt tension can be measured with Special Tool 8371-Belt Tension Gauge Adapter, and the DRBIII® using the following procedures:

  1. Connect 8371 to the DRBIII® following the instructions provided with tool.
  2.
  3. Place end of microphone probe approximately 1 inch (2.54cm) from belt at one of the belt center span locations.
  4.
  5. Pluck the belt a minimum of 3 times. (Use your finger or other suitable tool). The frequency of the belt in Hertz (Hz) will display on the DRBIII® screen.
  6.
  7. Adjust the belt to obtain the proper frequency (tension) listed below:
  8.

New Belts adjustment:

A/C & Alternator: 185-235 lbs. (250-320 N)

Power Steering Pump: 120-180 lbs. (163-245 N)

Used Belts adjustment:

A/C & Alternator: 110-160 lbs. (150-215 N)

Power Steering Pump: 70-115 lbs. (95-155 N)

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Mark running direction of belt rotation before removing belt. Reinstalling a used belt in the opposite running direction may result in reduced service life.

2.4L Engine
A/C & Alternator Belt
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the right front wheel and belt splash shield.
  6.
  7. Insert a 3 / 8 inch drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
    WARNING
Do not use excessive force to over compress belt tensioner. This may result in damage to the belt tensioner.

  8.
  9. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be removed from pulleys.
  10.
  11. Remove the belt.
  12.
  13. Gently release the tensioner.
  14.

To install:

NOTE
When installing the drive belt onto the pulleys, make sure that the belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with the pulley.

  1. Install the belt over all pulleys except for the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor pulley.
  2.
  3. Insert a 3 / 8 inch drive breaker bar into the square opening of the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  4.
  5. Gently apply a force to rotate belt tensioner clockwise until the belt tensioner bottoms out and the belt can be installed onto A/C compressor pulley.
  6.
  7. Install the belt over A/C compressor pulley.
  8.
  9. Release the spring tension onto the belt.
  10.
  11. Remove the breaker bar from the belt tensioner pivot bracket.
  12.
  13. Install the belt splash shield and the right front wheel. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.
  15. Lower vehicle.
