Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Recover the A/C refrigerant.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The throttle body air inlet hose
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The upper radiator crossmember
     
    The upper and lower radiator hoses
     
    The transaxle cooler lines
     
    The A/C lines at the condenser
     
    The radiator, fan module, and A/C condenser
     
    The transaxle electrical harness connectors
     
    The transaxle shift cable
     
    The engine electrical harness from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and bulkhead
     
    Both front wheels and splash shields
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The drive belts
     
    The power steering pump from the bracket and move it aside
     
    The heater return hose from the right front frame rail
     
    The A/C compressor electrical connectors
     
    The exhaust pipe from the manifold
     
    The through bolts from the front and rear engine mounts

    The torque converter bolts after matchmarking them
     
    The positive battery cable from the battery and the Power Distribution Center (PDC)
     
    The ground cable from the left side transaxle mount bracket
     
    The throttle and speed control cables
     
    The coolant overflow hose
     
    The heater hose from the thermostat housing
     
    The engine ground straps
     
    The brake booster and vacuum purge hoses
     
    The fuel lines from the rail
     
    The intake manifold
     
    The alternator
     
    The A/C suction line from the compressor and place an engine dolly and cradle in position
     

  12.  
  13. Loosen the cradle engine mounts and lower the engine/transaxle assembly onto the dolly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the vertical engine mount bolts.
  16.  
  17. Slowly raise the vehicle and make certain that the cradle is positioned properly.
  18.  
  19. Secure the engine/transaxle assembly to the cradle and remove the assembly.

To install:

  1. Position the engine/transaxle assembly under the vehicle and slowly lower the vehicle into position.
  2.  
  3. Continue to the lower the vehicle until the right side engine mount and left side transaxle mount are properly aligned.

  5. Install the mounting bolts and torque them to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle and remove the cradle.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    The A/C compressor and suction line
     
    The alternator
     
    The intake manifold and torque the bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    The alternator electrical connectors
     
    The fuel line to the rail
     
    The brake booster and vacuum purge hoses
     
    The engine ground straps
     
    The heater hose to the thermostat housing
     
    The coolant overflow hose
     
    The throttle and speed control cables
     
    The ground cable to the left side transaxle mount bracket
     
    The positive battery cable to the PDC
     
    The torque converter bolts
     
    The structural cover and the torque reaction bracket

    The rear mount bracket to the transaxle
     
    The front and rear engine mount through bolts. Torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
     
    The exhaust pipe to the manifold and torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    The A/C compressor electrical connectors
     
    The heater return hose to the right front frame rail
     
    The power steering pump to the bracket
     
    The drive belts
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The splash shields and front wheels. Tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
     
    The engine electrical harness to the PCM and the bulkhead connectors
     
    The transaxle shift cable
     
    The transaxle electrical connectors
     
    The radiator, fan module, and A/C condenser
     
    The A/C lines to the condenser
     
    The transaxle cooler lines
     
    The upper and lower radiator hoses
     
    The upper radiator crossmember
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    The throttle body air inlet hose
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with the proper amount and type of clean oil.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  14.  
  15. Recharge the A/C system.
  16.  
  17. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  18.  

2.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Recover the A/C refrigerant.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    The negative battery cable
     
    The throttle body air inlet hose
     
    The air cleaner assembly
     
    Both front wheels and splash shields
     
    The lower front fascia from the crossmember
     
    The lower air shield from the crossmember
     
    The front fascia
     
    The upper radiator crossmember
     
    The upper and lower radiator hoses
     
    The transaxle oil cooler lines
     
    The A/C lines from the condenser
     
    The radiator, fan, and A/C condenser
     
    The transaxle electrical harness connectors
     
    The transaxle shift cable
     
    The engine electrical harness from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and bulkhead connectors
     
    The Antilock Brake System (ABS) brake module from the lower radiator crossmember
     
    The brake line from the lower radiator crossmember
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The front engine mount through bolt
     
    The front engine mount from the lower radiator crossmember
     
    The lower radiator crossmember
     
    The drive belts
     
    The power steering pump and bracket. Do not disconnect the lines
     
    The heater return hose from the right front frame rail
     
    The A/C compressor electrical connectors and reposition the compressor
     
    The structural collar
     
    The exhaust system cross under pipe
     
    The rear engine mount and transaxle bracket
     
    The torque converter housing cover and match mark the bolts
     
    The positive battery cable from the Power Distribution Center (PDC)
     
    The ground cable from the left side transaxle mount bracket
     
    The throttle and speed control cables
     
    The coolant overflow hose
     
    The heater hose
     
    The ground strap from the right shock tower
     
    The fuel lines
     
    The brake booster and vacuum purge hoses
     
    The engine ground straps
     

  12.  
  13. Loosen the cradle engine mounts and lower the engine/transaxle assembly onto the dolly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the vertical engine mount bolts.
  16.  
  17. Slowly raise the vehicle and make certain that the cradle is positioned properly.
  18.  
  19. Secure the engine/transaxle assembly to the cradle and remove the assembly.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Position the engine/transaxle assembly under the vehicle and slowly lower the vehicle into position.
  2.  
  3. Continue to the lower the vehicle until the right side engine mount and left side transaxle mount are properly aligned.
  4.  
  5. Install the mounting bolts and torque them to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle and remove the cradle.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    The engine ground straps
     
    The brake booster and vacuum purge hoses
     
    The fuel lines
     
    The ground strap to the right shock tower
     
    The heater hose
     
    The coolant overflow hose
     
    The throttle and speed control cables
     
    The ground cable to the left transaxle mount bracket
     
    The positive battery cable to the PDC
     
    The torque converter bolts and cover
     
    The rear engine mount and transaxle bracket
     
    The exhaust system cross under pipe
     
    The structural collar
     
    The A/C compressor to the bracket
     
    The A/C compressor clutch electrical connectors
     
    The heater return hose to the right side frame rail
     
    The power steering pump and bracket
     
    The drive belts
     
    The lower radiator crossmember
     
    The front engine mount to the lower radiator crossmember
     
    Both halfshafts
     
    The brake line to the lower radiator crossmember
     
    The ABS module to the lower radiator crossmember
     
    The engine electrical harness to the PCM and bulkhead connectors
     
    The transaxle shift cable
     
    The transaxle electrical harness connectors
     
    The radiator, fan, and A/C condenser
     
    The A/C lines to the condenser
     
    The transaxle oil cooler lines
     
    The upper and lower radiator hoses
     
    The upper radiator crossmember
     
    The front bumper fascia and lower air shield
     
    The splash shields and both front wheels
     
    The air cleaner assembly and throttle body air inlet hose
     
    The negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with the proper amount of clean oil and replace the oil filter.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
  14.  
  15. Recharge the A/C system with the proper refrigerant.
  16.  
  17. Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Repair if necessary.
  18.
