Oil Pressure Sensor

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the heat shield that covers the oil pressure sensor (switch).
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Position an oil collecting container under the sensor location.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sensor by unscrewing it from the engine block.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Apply MOPAR® Thread Sealant to the sensor (switch) threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pressure switch. Tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pressure sensor heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.  
  13. Check the engine oil level and adjust as necessary.
  14.  

Testing



Before servicing any vehicle, please be sure to read the precautions section, which deals with personal safety, prevention of component damage, and important points to take into consideration when servicing a motor vehicle.

  1. With the vehicle on a level surface, allow adequate drain down time of 2-3 minutes and measure for a low oil level. Add the recommended grade engine oil and fill the crankcase until the oil level measures full on the oil level indicator.

  3. Run the engine, and verify low, or no oil pressure on the vehicle gage or light. Listen for a noisy valve train or a knocking noise.
  4.  
  5. Inspect for the following:

    Oil diluted by moisture or unburned fuel mixtures
     
    Improper oil viscosity for the expected temperature
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure sender
     
    Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure gauge
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Malfunctioning oil bypass valve
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pressure sender or another engine block oil gallery plug.
  8.  
  9. Install an oil pressure gauge and measure the engine oil pressure.
  10.  
  11. Compare the readings to specifications.
  12.  
  13. If the engine oil pressure is below specifications, inspect the engine for one or more of the following:

    Oil pump worn or dirty
     
    Oil pump-to-engine front cover bolts loose
     
    Oil pump screen loose, plugged, or damaged
     
    Oil pump screen O-ring seal missing or damaged
     
    Malfunctioning oil pump pressure regulator valve
     
    Excessive bearing clearance
     
    Cracked, porous, or restricted oil galleries
     
    Oil gallery plugs missing or incorrectly installed
     
    Broken lash adjusters
     

  14.  
  15. Higher than recommended oil pressure may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

    Worn or sticking oil pump pressure relief valve
     
    Plugged oil filter
     
    Improper viscosity oil
     

  16.  
  17. If the oil pressure tests according to specification and the oil pressure sensor gives a faulty reading, replace the oil pressure sensor (switch) as necessary.
