Diagnosis & Testing

DESCRIPTION

The power window system allows each of the door windows to be raised and lowered electrically by actuating a switch on the trim panel of each respective door. A master switch on the driver-s side front door trim panel allows the driver to raise or lower each of the passenger door windows, and to lock out the individual switches on the passenger doors from operation.

The power window system receives battery feed through a 30-amp circuit breaker in the junction block, only when the ignition switch is in the RUN position.

The power window system includes the power window switches on each door trim panel, the circuit breaker in the junction block, and the power window motors inside each door.

Switch

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  1. Remove the window switch.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, refer to the Window Switch Continuity Charts to determine if the continuity is correct.
  4.  
  5. If the specified results are not obtained, replace the switch.
  6.  

The master window switch has an Auto-Down feature. Actuation of the master switch to the second down position will move the driver-s side window completely down. The electronic switch will automatically disconnect the motor approximately 1 second after the window bottoms out. Failure of the electronic switch to detect a stall current, will cause the switch to disconnect after approximately 13 seconds. The auto down function can be canceled by any movement of that switch.

Window Motor & Regulator

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Connect the positive lead from a test battery to either of the 2 motor terminals.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative lead from a test battery to the remaining motor terminal.
  6.  
  7. The motor should now rotate in one direction to either move the window up or down.
    1. If the window happens to already be in the full UP position and the motor is connected so as to move it in the UP direction, no movement will be observed.
    2.  
    3. Likewise, if the motor is connected to move the window in the DOWN direction, no movement will be observed if the window is already in the full DOWN position.
    4.  
    5. Reverse the battery leads and the window should now move. If the window does not move, replace the motor.
    6.

  9. If the window moved completely up or down, the test leads should be reversed one more time to complete a full window travel inspection.
  10.  
  11. If the window does not move, check to make sure that it is free and not binding on something.
  12.  
  13. It is necessary that the window be free to slide up and down in the glass channels. If the window is not free to move up and down, the window lift motor will not be able to move the glass.
  14.  
  15. To determine if the glass is free, disconnect the regulator from the glass lift plate. Remove the 2 attaching screws, and slide the window up and down by hand.

Removal & Installation
Switch
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the door trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the switch mounting fasteners.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the switch and mounting fasteners.
  2.  
  3. Install the door trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

Window Motor & Regulator
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the door trim panel and water shield.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wire connector to the power window motor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts attaching the regulator lift channel to the door glass.
  10.  
  11. Secure door glass in the upward position.
  12.  
  13. Mark the position of the rear bolt of the roller channel to the inner door panel for an aid in installation.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt attaching the rear of the roller channel to the door panel.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the bolt attaching the front of the roller channel to the door panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the roller channel from the door panel.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the bolts attaching the window regulator to the inner door panel reinforcement.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bolt heads from the key hole slots in the inner door panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the window regulator through the large hole in the inner door panel.
    CAUTION
    Failure to clamp the sector gear to the mounting plate when removing the motor can result in injury.

  27. Secure the sector and mounting plate with a C-clamp or similar clamping tool. This will prevent a sudden and forceful movement of the regulator when the motor is removed.

  29. Remove the motor from the regulator.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the motor on the regulator by positioning the motor gearbox so that it engages the regulator sector teeth. A slight rotational or rocking movement may be necessary to bring the motor gearbox mounting holes into proper position.
  2.  
  3. Install the motor fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the power window motor on the regulator.
  6.  
  7. Move the window regulator into position in the door and engage the bolt heads into the key hole slots in the inner door panel reinforcement and tighten the bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the roller channel to the door panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the bolt at the rear of the roller channel. Make sure that the bolt is aligned to the mark on the inner door panel made previously.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the front and rear bolts of the roller channel.
  14.  
  15. Install the nuts attaching the regulator lift channel to the door glass.
  16.  
  17. Verify the glass fit and operation. Adjust the door glass, if necessary.
  18.  
  19. Connect the wire connector to the power window motor.
  20.  
  21. Install the door water dam and door trim panel.
  22.
