Knuckle

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with Antilock Brakes System (ABS), remove the rear wheel speed sensor from the brake flex hose routing bracket.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor head mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with rear disc brakes, remove the caliper and rotor.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear hub and bearing assembly retaining nut and washer.
  16.  
  17. If equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the parking brake cable from parking brake actuating lever, then remove the cable from the drum brake support plate.
  18.  
  19. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the drum brake support plate/disc brake adapter to the knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Remove the drum brake support plate, brake shoes, and wheel cylinder assembly/disc brake adapter from the knuckle.
    NOTE
    It is not necessary to remove the brake flex hose from the brake wheel cylinder when removing the support plate.

  23. Once the brake assembly is removed, hang the plate from the rear shock assembly using a mechanics wire. Do not allow brake assembly to hang by flex hose.

  25. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the forward and rear lateral links.

  27. Back off the nut retaining the upper control arm ball joint to the knuckle until it is flush with the end of the ball joint stud. (Leaving the nut on will protect the threads from damage during next step).

  29. Release the ball joint stud from the knuckle using Puller, Special Tool, CT-1106.
  30.  
  31. Remove the nut retaining the upper control arm ball joint to the knuckle.
  32.  
  33. Remove the nut and washer attaching the trailing link to the rear knuckle. Use a wrench on the flat of the trailing link to keep it from turning when removing the nut.

  35. Remove the shock absorber clevis bracket to knuckle attaching nut and bolt.
  36.  
  37. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Install the knuckle on the clevis bracket of the rear shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Install the clevis bracket to the shock absorber attaching bolt with the head of the bolt facing the rear of the vehicle.
    WARNING
    When installing the trailing link bushing retainers, the retainers must be installed with the cupped side of retainer facing away from the bushing and the knuckle.

  5. Install the knuckle on the trailing link.
  6.  
  7. Install the trailing link outer bushing, gold bushing retainer, and the retaining nut on the trailing link (Trailing Link Bushing And Retainer Installation).

  9. Using a large adjustable wrench to keep the trailing link from rotating, tighten the trailing link retaining nut to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).

  11. Install the upper ball joint stud into the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Install and tighten the ball joint stud nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the front and rear lateral links to the knuckle with the attaching nuts and bolts. Tighten the attaching bolt nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the rear drum brake assembly/disc brake adapter onto the knuckle. Install the 4 mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).

  19. If equipped with rear drum brakes, install the parking brake cable into support plate and attach it to the parking brake actuating lever.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear hub and bearing on the knuckle and install the hub nut. Tighten the hub nut to 184 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).

  23. If equipped with rear disc brakes, install the rotor and caliper.
  24.  
  25. If equipped with rear drum brakes, install the brake drum and adjust the brake shoes as necessary.
  26.  
  27. If equipped with ABS, install the wheel speed sensor head. Tighten the speed sensor head mounting bolt to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  28.  
  29. If equipped with ABS, attach the routing bracket for the wheel speed sensor cable to the brake flex hose bracket and securely tighten the attaching bolt.
  30.  
  31. Install the wheel and tire assembly on the vehicle. Install the wheel mounting (lug) nuts and progressively tighten the nuts in a crisscross sequence to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Check and reset the rear wheel alignment to specifications as required.
