Engine Not Rotated

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 1999-2001

Nissan Sentra 1997-2001

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure the distributor is fully seated and the distributor gear is fully engaged.



    New distributor housing O-ring
     
    Distributor so the rotor is aligned with the matchmark on the housing and the housing is aligned with the matchmark on the engine
     



    Snug the hold-down bolt
     
    Distributor pick-up lead wires
     
    Distributor cap and tighten the screws
     
    Splash shield
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. After the ignition timing has been adjusted, tighten the hold-down bolt(s) as follows:

    1.6L and 1.8L engines: 80-104 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm)
     
    2.0L and 2.4L engines: 108-144 inch lbs. (13-16 Nm)

Installation -Timing Lost

Specific to:

Nissan Altima 1999-2001

Nissan Sentra 1997-2001

  1. Install the a new distributor housing O-ring
  2.  
  3. Position the engine so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of its compression stroke and the mark on the vibration damper is aligned with 0 on the timing indicator.

    Distributor in the engine so the rotor is aligned with the position of the No. 1 ignition wire on the distributor cap. Be sure the distributor is fully seated and that the distributor shaft is fully engaged.
     
    Snug the hold-down bolt
     
    Distributor pick-up lead wires
     
    Distributor cap and tighten the screws. Install the splash shield, if equipped.
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Negative battery cable.

  5. After the ignition timing has been adjusted, tighten the hold-down bolt(s) as follows:

    1.6L and 1.8L engines: 80-104 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm)
     
    2.0L and 2.4L engines: 108-144 inch lbs. (13-16 Nm)

Removal



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) with the No. 1 piston on compression stroke.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not disturb the camshaft or crankshaft position after the distributor is removed from the engine. If any of these components are moved, TDC on cylinder No. 1 will have to be found again before reinstalling the distributor.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Distributor spark plug wires from the distributor cap
     
    Distributor cap. Scribe a mark on the engine block to show the rotor and distributor position prior to removal.
     
    Wiring connections to the distributor
     
    Bolt(s) holding distributor to engine
     
    Distributor by pulling it upward from the cylinder block
