Removal & Installation




NOTE
The engine and transaxle are removed as one unit from the underside of the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant from the radiator and the engine block.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative and positive battery cables
     
    Battery and tray from the vehicle
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Engine undercovers and the engine side covers
     
    Air cleaner assembly and air duct
     
    Vacuum hoses. Make sure to note the locations prior to disconnection them.
     
    Heater hoses from the engine
     
    Automatic transmission cooler hoses from the transaxle, if equipped
     
    Power steering hoses
     
    Fuel hoses from the engine
     
    Harness and wiring connections. Make sure to note the locations prior to disconnecting them.
     
    Throttle cable and the cruise control cable
     
    Control cable, if equipped with an automatic transmission
     
    Cooling fans, radiator and the recovery tank
     
    Front halfshafts from the vehicle
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Starter motor and intake manifold support brackets
     
    Engine drive belts
     
    Alternator and adjusting brackets
     
    Power steering pump and A/C compressor. It is not necessary to disconnect the lines.

  11. Position a transmission jack under the transaxle and support the engine with engine slinger.

    Center crossmember
     
    Front stabilizer bar, if necessary
     
    Engine mounting bolts from both sides of the engine

  13. Slowly lower the jacking devices and remove the engine and transaxle from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Engine and transaxle assembly
     
    Mounting bolts to both sides of the engine and torque the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. For vehicles with manual transaxles, adjust the height of the mounting bracket (buffer rod). The distance between the 2 through-bolts should be 2.13-2.20 in. (54-56mm).

    Center crossmember and torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)

  5. Remove the engine support jacks and engine slinger.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    A/C compressor and power steering pump
     
    Alternator and brackets
     
    Starter motor and intake manifold support bracket
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Drive belts
     
    Both front halfshafts
     
    Radiator, cooling fans and recovery tank
     
    Control cable, automatic transmissions only
     
    Throttle and cruise control cables, if equipped
     
    Wiring harness and electrical connections
     
    Power steering hoses and fuel line
     
    Transmission cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Engine side and under covers
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Battery tray and battery
     
    Both battery cables
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks. Make all the necessary adjustments.
  14.  

1.6L Engine

NOTE

    Control rod and support rod from the transaxle
     
    Starter motor and intake manifold support brackets
     
    Engine drive belts
     
    Alternator and adjusting brackets
     
    Power steering pump and A/C compressor. It is not necessary to disconnect the lines.
     
    Cylinder head front mounting bracket

  11. Position a transmission jack under the transaxle and support the engine with engine slinger.

    Center crossmember

    Engine mounting bolts from both sides of the engine

    Alternator and brackets
     
    Starter motor and intake manifold support bracket
     
    Control and support rod. Torque the control rod bolt to 10-13 ft. lbs. (14-18 Nm) and the support rod bolt to 26-35 ft. lbs. (35-47 Nm).
     
    Front exhaust pipe
     
    Drive belts
     
    Both front halfshafts
     
    Radiator, cooling fans and recovery tank
     
    Control cable, automatic transmissions only
     
    Throttle and cruise control cables, if equipped
     
    Wiring harness and electrical connections
     
    Power steering hoses and fuel line
     
    Transmission cooler lines, if equipped
     
    Vacuum hoses
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Engine side and under covers
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Battery tray and battery
     
    Both battery cables
     

  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with clean oil.
  10.  
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks. Make all the necessary adjustments.
