CAUTION
Before removing the front axle assembly, disconnect the ABS wheel sensor from the assembly. Then move it away from the front axle assembly area. Failure to do so may result in damage to the sensor wires and the sensor becoming inoperative.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Brake hose need not be disconnected from brake caliper. In this case, suspend caliper assembly with wire so as not to stretch brake hose. Be careful not to depress brake pedal, or piston will pop out. Make sure brake hose is not twisted.


    NOTE
    Cover boots with shop towel so as not to damage them when removing drive shaft.



    Cotter pin and wheel bearing lock nut
     
    Tie-rod from knuckle with Tool
     



    Brake caliper assembly, torque member and rotor
     
    Strut lower mounting nuts and bolts
     



    Separate drive shaft from knuckle by lightly tapping it. If it is hard to remove, use a puller.
     
    Lower ball joint nut
     
    Knuckle from lower ball joint stud

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. For Sentra vehicles, perform the following:
    NOTE
    Before tightening, apply oil to threaded portion of drive axle.



    When installing knuckle to strut, hold the bolts and tighten the nuts. Tighten to: 84-98 ft. lbs (114-133 Nm).
     



    For 2.5L vehicles, tighten wheel bearing lock nut to: 199-245 ft. lbs (255-333 Nm). For all other engine sizes, tighten to: 145-202 ft. lbs (197-274 Nm).

  5. For Altima vehicles, perform the following:
    NOTE
    Before tightening, apply oil to threaded portion of drive axle.



    When installing knuckle to strut, hold the bolts and tighten the nuts. Tighten to: 123-127 ft. lbs (167-186 Nm).
     



    Tighten wheel bearing lock nut to: 174-231 ft. lbs (197-274 Nm).

  7. Rotate wheel hub to check that wheel bearings operate smoothly.
