NOTE
Whenever the hub or bearing assemblies are removed, the wheel bearing must be replaced. Never reuse the old bearing assembly.

The wheel bearings are sealed and are not adjustable. If defective, replacement is the only option.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Whenever the hub or bearing assembly is removed, the wheel bearing assembly must be replaced. Never reuse the old bearing assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Do not depress the brake pedal or twist the brake line.



    Front wheel
     
    Wheel bearing/axle shaft locknut while depressing the brake pedal
     
    Brake caliper and support it with a piece of wire. It is not necessary to disconnect the brake line from the caliper.
     
    Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) sensor from the steering knuckle
     



    Tie rod end
     
    Halfshaft from the knuckle by slightly tapping with a soft hammer. Position the axle shaft nut on the threads of the shaft to protect them when lightly tapping.
     
    Lower ball joint nut and separate
     
    2 strut-to-knuckle retaining bolts and separate
     
    Steering knuckle from the vehicle

  5. Place the assembly in a vise. Drive the hub with the inner race from the knuckle with a suitable tool. Remove the inner and outer grease seals.

    Snapring and press the bearing outer race to remove the bearing from the steering knuckle
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle assembly not exceeding 3.3 tons (2994 kg) pressure.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Snapring and pack the grease seal lips with chassis grease
     
    Inner and outer grease seals
     

  4.  
  5. Press the wheel hub into the knuckle not exceeding 3.3 tons (2994 kg) pressure.
  6.  
  7. Check bearing operation and by applying 3.9-5.5 tons (3538-4990 kg) pressure to the hub assembly. Spin the hub several times in both directions.
  8.  
  9. Be sure the bearings rotate freely. If the bearings do not rotate freely, replace the bearings.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Knuckle and wheel hub assembly
     
    Lower ball joint and torque the nut to 43-54 ft. lbs. (59-74 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Strut and torque the bolts to 68-82 ft. lbs. (92-118 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end and tighten the nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Disc brake caliper
     
    Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 145-203 ft. lbs. (196-275 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Front wheels and lower the vehicle
     

  12.  
  13. Check the vehicle's alignment.
  14.  
  15. Road test the vehicle and verify proper operation.
