Fig. Steering gear

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Low pressure hose clamp
     
    Low pressure hose at the steering gear. Be sure to use a pan to catch the fluid.
     
    Flare nut and the high pressure tube at the steering gear, then drain the fluid from the gear

  5. Place a floor jack under the transaxle and support it.

    Front exhaust pipe and the rear engine mount
     

  6.  
  7. Position the front wheels so they are pointing straight ahead.
  8.

  9. Matchmark the steering column lower joint to the steering gear.
    NOTE
    The steering gear splines have a flat spot or keyway. Be sure to note this during removal.

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolt that secures steering column lower joint
     
    Bolts, steering gear unit and the linkage
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure to align the flat spot or keyway during installation.



    Power steering gear assembly to the vehicle. Align the steering column to the steering gear.

    Steering gear mounts and torque the bolts in sequence to 87-101 ft. lbs. (118-137 Nm_.
     
    Pinch bolt for the steering column-to-gear connection and torque the bolt to 17-22 ft. lbs. (24-29 Nm)

    Tie rod ends to the steering knuckle and torque the nut to 47-51 ft. lbs. (64-69 Nm). Tighten the tie rod mounting nut further so the groves in the nut align with first cotter pin hole. Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Power steering low pressure hose and torque the fitting to 22-26 ft. lbs. (30-35 Nm)
     
    Power steering high pressure and torque the fitting to 22-26 ft. lbs. (30-35 Nm)
     
    Rear engine mount and remove the floor jack
     
    Front exhaust pipe assembly using new gaskets
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the power steering system and start the engine.
  4.  
  5. Check the wheel alignment.
  6.
