Removal & Installation



2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Rocker arm cover, gasket and the oil separator
     
    Intake manifold supports, oil filter bracket and the power steering pump
     

  6.  
  7. Set the No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the position of the rotor and housing and remove the distributor.
    NOTE
    When removing the camshafts, loosen the journal caps in the opposite sequence of tightening. Camshaft damage may result if this step is not followed.


    NOTE
    It is essential that all parts be kept in the same order and orientation for reinstallation. Be sure to mark and separate parts to keep them from getting mixed. This will aid assembly.


    NOTE
    The valve lifters must be stored in the vertical position or submersed in clean oil to prevent air from entering the lifters.



    Timing chain guide
     
    Camshaft sprockets while holding the camshaft stationary with a large wrench. Secure the timing chain with wire so the timing is not lost. The front cover will have to be removed if the chain timing is lost.
     



    Camshafts, brackets, oil tubes and the baffle plate. Label all components for proper installation.
     



    Rocker arms, shims, rocker arm guides and the hydraulic lash adjusters. Label all components for proper installation.

  11. Inspect the surfaces of the rockers and replace if there are any signs of damage.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the rocker arms, shims, rocker arm guides and the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms, shims, rocker arm guides and the hydraulic lash adjusters in their original locations
     
    Camshafts, brackets, oil tubes and the baffle plate in the proper location
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Right camshaft bolts Nos. 9 and No. 10: 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Right camshaft bolts No. 1 through 8: 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Left camshaft bolts Nos. 11 and 12: 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Left camshaft bolts Nos. 1 through 10: 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    8.  
    9. All camshaft bolts in numerical sequence: 52 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    10.  
    11. All camshaft bolts in numerical sequence: 87-104 inch lbs. (10-11 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Rear 2 bolts of the left-hand camshaft: 13-19 ft. lbs. (18-25 Nm).
    14.  

  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft sprockets while holding the camshaft stationary with a large wrench
     
    Remaining components in the reverse order from which they were removed
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  8.  
  9. Check and adjust the ignition and valve timing. If there is air in the lifters, bleed the air by running the engine at 1000 rpm for 10 minutes.
