If the wheel hub bearing assembly is removed, it must be replaced.


NOTE
The wheel hub bearing assembly is not repairable; it must be replaced when defective.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 138-188 ft. lbs. (187-255 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Verify that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin into the spindle to hold the wheel bearing locknut.
  8.  
  9. Install a dial indicator to the rear wheel hub bearing assembly and check the axial end-play; it should be less than 0.0020 in. (0.05mm).
  10.  
  11. Install the grease cap.
  12.  
  13. If the axial end-play exceeds specifications, the wheel bearing must be replaced.
  14.

CAUTION
Before removing the rear wheel hub assembly, disconnect the ABS wheel sensor from the assembly. Then move it away from the hub assembly. Failure to do so may result in damage to the sensor wires and the sensor becoming inoperative.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove brake caliper assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheel bearing lock nut
  6.  
  7. Remove brake rotor
  8.  
  9. Remove wheel hub bearing from spindle
    NOTE
    Brake hose does not need to be disconnected from brake caliper. Suspend caliper assembly with wire so as not to stretch brake hose. Be careful not to depress brake pedal, or piston will pop out. Make sure brake hose is not twisted.

  11. Remove the ABS sensor rotor using suitable puller, drift and bearing replacer.
  12.  

To install:


NOTE
Do not reuse ABS sensor rotor. When installing, replace it with a new one.

  1. With vehicles equipped with ABS, press-fit ABS sensor rotor into wheel hub bearing using a drift.
    NOTE
    Before tightening, apply oil to threaded portion of rear spindle.

  2.  
  3. Install wheel hub bearing. Do not re-use wheel bearing lock-nut. Tighten to: 138-188 ft. lbs (187-255 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Check that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
