Belt tension is not manually adjustable, it is automatically adjusted by the drive belt auto-tensioner.

Inspection



2.0L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


CAUTION
Inspect the drive belt only when the engine is stopped.


NOTE
Make sure that the indicator (notch on fixed side) of drive belt auto-tensioner is within the possible use range.


NOTE
On vehicles not equipped with A/C, there is an idler pulley in the position for the drive belt routing.


NOTE
Check the drive belt auto-tensioner indicator (notch) when the engine is cold.


NOTE
When the new drive belt is installed, the range of possible use should be as shown in the accompanying illustration.

NOTE
Visually check entire belt for wear, damage or cracks.


NOTE
If the indicator is out of allowable use range or belt is damaged, replace the drive belt.

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


WARNING
Inspect the drive belt only when the engine is stopped.


NOTE
Make sure that the indicator (notch on fixed side) of drive belt auto-tensioner is within the possible use range.


NOTE
Check the drive belt auto-tensioner indicator (notch) when the engine is cold.


NOTE
When the new drive belt is installed, the range of possible use should be as shown in the accompanying illustration.

Removal & Installation



Drive Belt
2.0L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012

  1. Remove the splash shield RH. Refer to Fenders & Body Panels in the Body Section.
  2.  
  3. Securely hold the hexagonal part of drive belt auto-tensioner with a suitable tool. Then move the tool in the proper direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner).
    CAUTION
    Never place hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    NOTE
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt.


    NOTE
    Do not turn the auto-tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise.


    NOTE
    If the auto-tensioner pulley bolt is turned counterclockwise for any reason, the auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.

    Fig. Securely hold the hexagonal part (A) of drive belt auto-tensioner (1) with a suitable tool. Then move the tool in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner). Insert a rod approximately 6 mm (0.24 in) in diameter into the hole (B) of the retaining boss to lock drive belt auto-tensioner

  5. Insert a rod approximately 0.24 inch (6 mm) in diameter into the hole of the retaining boss to lock drive belt auto-tensioner.
    1. Leave tensioner pulley arm locked until belt is installed again.
    2.

  7. Remove drive belt.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install drive belt.
    NOTE
    Confirm drive belt is set completely and correctly on all of the pulleys.

  2.  
  3. Release drive belt auto-tensioner, and apply tension to drive belt.
    CAUTION
    Never place hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    NOTE
    Ensure the drive belt and each groove on the pulley are free from all engine oil, coolant and other contaminants.

  4.  
  5. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise several times to equalize tension between each pulley.
  6.  
  7. Confirm tension of drive belt at indicator is within the allowable use range. Refer to Inspection in the Accessory Drive Belt Section.
  8.  
  9. Install the splash shield RH. Refer to Fenders & Body Panels in the Body Section.
  10.  

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012

  1. Remove the splash shield (RH). Refer to Fenders & Body Panels in the Body Section.
  2.  
  3. Securely hold the hexagonal part in pulley center of drive belt auto-tensioner, move in the proper direction using Tool (J-46535).
    CAUTION
    Never place hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    NOTE
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt.


    NOTE
    Do not turn the auto-tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise.


    NOTE
    If the auto-tensioner pulley bolt is turned counterclockwise for any reason, the auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.

    Fig. Securely hold the hexagonal part in pulley center of drive belt auto-tensioner, move in the direction of arrow (loosening direction of tensioner) using Tool.

  5. Insert a rod approximately 0.24 inch (6 mm) in diameter through the rear of tensioner into retaining boss to lock tensioner pulley.
    1. Leave tensioner pulley arm locked until belt is installed again.
    2.

  7. Remove drive belt.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt onto all of the pulleys except for the water pump pulley. Install the drive belt onto water pump pulley last.
    NOTE
    Confirm drive belt is completely set on the pulleys.

  2.  
  3. Release drive belt auto-tensioner, and apply tension to drive belt.
    CAUTION
    Never place hand in a location where pinching may occur if the holding tool accidentally comes off.


    NOTE
    Ensure the drive belt and each groove on the pulley are free from all engine oil, coolant and other contaminants.

  5. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise several times to equalize tension between each pulley.

Drive Belt Tensioner
2.0L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


NOTE
The complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including the pulley.

  1. Remove front air duct. Refer to Air Intake System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative terminal. Refer to Battery System in the Engine Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  6.  
  7. Support the engine and remove the torque rod (RH), engine mounting insulator (RH) and engine mounting bracket (RH). Refer to Engine in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  8.  
  9. Release the fixed drive belt auto-tensioner pulley.
  10.  
  11. Loosen bolt and remove drive belt auto-tensioner.
    NOTE
    Use TORX socket (size T50).

  12.  
  13. Remove idler pulley and bracket (models without A/C).
    NOTE
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt.


    NOTE
    Do not turn the auto-tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise.


    NOTE
    If the auto-tensioner pulley bolt is turned counterclockwise for any reason, the auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.

To install:


NOTE
The complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including the pulley.


WARNING
If there is damage greater than peeled paint, replace drive belt auto-tensioner units


WARNING
Install the drive belt auto-tensioner carefully so as to not damage the water pump pulley.


NOTE
Do not swap the pulley between the new and old auto-tensioner units.


NOTE
The auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.


NOTE
If the auto-tensioner pulley bolt is turned counterclockwise for any reason, the auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.


NOTE
Do not turn the auto-tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise.


NOTE
Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt.


NOTE
Use TORX socket (size T50).

  1. Install idler pulley and bracket (models without A/C).
  2.  
  3. Tighten bolt and install drive belt auto-tensioner.
  4.  
  5. Engage the fixed drive belt auto-tensioner pulley.
  6.  
  7. Support the engine and install the torque rod (RH), engine mounting insulator (RH) and engine mounting bracket (RH). Refer to Engine in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  8.  
  9. Install drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  10.  
  11. Connect battery negative terminal. Refer to Battery System in the Engine Electrical Section.
  12.  
  13. Install front air duct. Refer to Air Intake System in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  14.  

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


NOTE
The complete auto-tensioner must be replaced as a unit, including the pulley.

  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt System in the Engine Mechanical Section
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine room cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine coolant reservoir.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine and remove the engine mounting insulator and bracket (RH). Refer to Engine in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt auto-tensioner.
    NOTE
    Do not loosen the auto-tensioner pulley bolt.


    NOTE
    Do not turn the auto-tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise.


    NOTE
    If the auto-tensioner pulley bolt is turned counterclockwise for any reason, the auto-tensioner and pulley must be replaced as a unit.
