2.0 Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012


CAUTION
Put a -CAUTION: FLAMMABLE- sign in the workshop.


CAUTION
Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and furnish workshop with a CO2 fire extinguisher.


CAUTION
Do not smoke while servicing fuel system. Keep open flames and sparks away from the work area.

  1. Drain engine coolant and engine oil. Refer to Engine Coolant in the Engine Cooling Section and Engine Oil & Filter in the Maintenance Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the following components and related parts:
    1. Exhaust manifold; Refer to Exhaust Manifold in the Engine Mechanical Section.
    2.  
    3. Intake manifold; Refer to Intake Manifold in the Engine Mechanical Section.
    4.  
    5. Fuel tube and fuel injector assembly; Refer to Gasoline Fuel Injection System in the Fuel Systems Section.
    6.  
    7. Water inlet and thermostat. Refer Thermostat in the Engine Cooling Section.
    8.  
    9. Water outlet; Refer to Water Outlet And Water Control Valve in the Engine Cooling Section.
    10.  
    11. Front cover, timing chain; Refer to Timing Chain, Front Cover and Seal, Sprockets in the Engine Mechanical Section.
    12.  
    13. Camshaft; Refer to Camshaft in the Engine Mechanical Section.

  5. Remove cylinder head.
    1. Loosen bolts in reverse order as shown.
    2.  
    3. Using TORX®socket (size E18), loosen cylinder head bolts.

  7. Remove cylinder head gasket.

To install:

  1. Install cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. Apply new engine oil to threads and seating surface of bolts.
    NOTE
    If cylinder head bolts are re-used, check their outer diameters before installation. Follow the "Cylinder Head Bolts Outer Diameter" procedure as shown in Inspection After Removal in the Cylinder Head Section.

  4.  
  5. Install cylinder head, follow the steps below to tighten cylinder head bolts in numerical order as shown in the accompanying illustration.
    1. Step a : 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step b : 100°clockwise
    4.  
    5. Step c : Loosen to 0 Nm in the reverse order of tightening.
    6.  
    7. Step d : 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
    8.  
    9. Step e : 100°clockwise
    10.  
    11. Step f : 100°clockwise
      NOTE
      Check and confirm the tightening angle by using Tool: KV10112100 (BT-8653-A) or protractor. Never judge by visual inspection without the tool.

  7. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.

Inspection After Removal

Cylinder Head Bolts Outer Diameter

  1. Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening method. Whenever the size difference between -d1- and -d2- exceeds the limit, replace them with a new one.

Cylinder Head Distortion


NOTE
When performing this inspection, cylinder block distortion should be also checked.

  1. Wipe off engine oil and remove water scale (like deposit), gasket, sealant, carbon, etc. with a scraper.
    NOTE
    Use utmost care not to allow gasket debris to enter passages for engine oil or water.

  2.  
  3. At each of several locations on bottom surface of cylinder head, measure the distortion in six directions using straightedge and feeler gauge.

    1. If it exceeds the limit, replace cylinder head.

Cylinder Block Top Surface Distortion Check

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012

  1. Using a scraper, remove gasket on the cylinder block surface, and also remove engine oil, scale, carbon, or other contamination.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to allow gasket flakes to enter engine oil or engine coolant passages.

  2.  
  3. Measure the distortion on the cylinder block upper face at some different points in six directions with a straight edge and feeler gauge.

  5. If it exceeds the limit, replace cylinder block.

2.5L Engine

Specific to:

Nissan Sentra 2007-2012

  1. Remove the timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain, Front Cover and Seal, Sprockets in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshafts. Refer to Camshaft in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  4.  
  5. Remove spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plugs & Wires in the Engine Electrical Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold in the Engine Mechanical Section
  8.  
  9. Remove cylinder head loosening bolts in the order as shown in the accompanying illustration using power tool.

  11. Remove water outlet if necessary. Refer to Water Outlet And Water Control Valve in the Engine Cooling Section.

To install:

  1. Install a new cylinder head gasket.
  2.  
  3. Follow the steps below to tighten the cylinder head bolts using Tool, in the numerical order as shown:
    1. Apply new engine oil to the threads and the seating surfaces of bolts.
      NOTE
      If cylinder head bolts are re-used, check their outer diameters before installation. Follow the "Outer Diameter of Cylinder Head Bolts" procedure in Inspection After Removal in the Cylinder Head Section.


      NOTE
      Check and confirm the tightening angle by using angle wrench or protractor. Avoid judgment by visual inspection without the tool KV10112100 (BT-8653-A)

    2.  
    3. Step a : 37 ft. lbs. (98.1 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Step c : Loosen to 0 Nm in the reverse order of tightening.
    6.  
    7. Step d : 29 ft. lbs. (39.2 Nm)
    8.  
    9. Step e : 75°clockwise
    10.  
    11. Step f : 75°clockwise

Inspection After Removal

Outer Diameter of Cylinder Head Bolts

  1. Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening method. Whenever the size difference between d1 and d2 exceeds the limit, replace the bolts with new ones. Limit (d1 - d2): 0.0091 in. (0.23 mm) or less.
