Hub & Bearing

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove wheel and tire using power tool.
  2.  
  3. Remove wheel sensor from steering knuckle. Refer to Wheel Speed Sensor in the Brakes Section.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  4.  
  5. Remove cotter pin, then loosen lock nut using power tool.
    WARNING
    Temporarily leave the hub lock nut installed to prevent damage to threads.

  6.  
  7. Remove the brake torque member, caliper and pads as an assembly using power tool, then remove the disc rotor. Refer to Front Disc Brakes in the Brakes Section.
    WARNING
    Do not twist or stretch brake hose.


    WARNING
    Do not drop the pads or shims.


    NOTE
    The brake hose does not need to be disconnected from the brake caliper.


    NOTE
    Suspend the brake torque member, caliper and pads as an assembly using wire.


    NOTE
    Do not depress the brake pedal, or the caliper piston will pop out.

  8.  
  9. Separate the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool, and then remove lock nut.
    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  11. Remove the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly and support the driveshaft.
    WARNING
    Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the wheel hub and bearing assembly,


    WARNING
    Do not excessively extend slide joint.


    WARNING
    Do not allow driveshaft to hang down. Support the entire driveshaft.

  13. Remove wheel hub and bearing assembly bolts, and then remove splash guard and wheel hub and bearing assembly from steering knuckle.

Inspection After Removal

  1. Wheel Hub and Knuckle Inspection
  2.  
  3. Check for any deformity, cracks, or other damage on the wheel hub assembly, replace if necessary.
    NOTE
    The wheel hub assembly does not require maintenance. If any of the following symptoms are noted, replace the wheel hub assembly.

  5. Growling noise is emitted from the wheel hub bearing during operation.
  6.  
  7. Wheel hub bearing drags or turns roughly.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Apply grease Molykote M77 to contact surface between wheel hub and driveshaft. Use sufficient grease to completely coat contact area.

NOTE
When installing disc rotor on wheel hub and bearing assembly, align the marks. Refer to Front Disc Brakes in the Brakes Section, when not using the alignment mark.

NOTE
Tighten wheel nuts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).


NOTE
Perform the final tightening of each of parts under unladen conditions, which were removed when removing wheel hub and bearing assembly and steering knuckle. Check the wheel alignment.


WARNING
Do not apply an excessive angle to driveshaft joint when removing from the wheel hub and bearing assembly,

  3. Install the driveshaft to the wheel hub and bearing assembly and support the driveshaft.

  5. Install the driveshaft from the wheel hub and bearing assembly by lightly tapping the end of the driveshaft using a hammer or suitable tool, and then install lock nut.
    NOTE
    Use a suitable puller if wheel hub and bearing assembly and driveshaft cannot be separated after performing the above procedure.

  7. Install the brake torque member, caliper and pads as an assembly using power tool, then install the disc rotor. Refer to Front Disc Brakes in the Brakes Section.
    WARNING
