Removal & Installation

  1. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Air Conditioning System Maintenance in the Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Section
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Engine Coolant in the Engine Cooling Section.
  4.  
  5. Reposition the lower dash insulator out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core pipes.
    NOTE
    Cap or wrap the joint of the pipe with suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid entry of contaminants.

  8.  
  9. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator as shown in the accompanying illustrations.
    NOTE
    Cap or wrap the joint of the pipe with suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid entry of contaminants.

  11. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column in the Steering Section.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument panel assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel in the Body Section.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower steering member stays.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the following components:

    Shift lock cable
     
    Steering harness clips
     
    SMJ
     
    Fuse box
     
    Door harness
     
    Front pillar harness
     
    CVT shift cable (if equipped)
     
    M/T shift cable (if equipped)
     
    A/C drain hose
     
    Air bag module control unit

  19. Disconnect the evaporator drain hose.
  20.  
  21. Remove the steering member bolt caps.
  22.  
  23. Support both front doors with a suitable jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove both front door upper hinge bolts. Refer to Doors in the Body Section.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering member bolts.
  28.  
  29. Temporarily install the front door upper hinge bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the heater and cooling unit and the steering member from the vehicle as one unit.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the interior and seat trim when removing the heater and cooling unit assembly and steering member from the vehicle.

  33. Disconnect the following components to separate the heater and cooling unit assembly from the steering member

    Front blower motor
     
    Fan control amplifier
     
    air mix door motor
     
    Mode door motor
     
    Intake door motor

  35. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly from the steering member.

To install:

  1. Install the heater and cooling unit assembly to the steering member.
  2.  
  3. Connect the following components to separate the heater and cooling unit assembly to the steering member
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the interior and seat trim when removing the heater and cooling unit assembly and steering member from the vehicle.



    Intake door motor
     
    Mode door motor
     
    air mix door motor
     
    Fan control amplifier
     
    Front blower motor
     

  4.  
  5. Install the heater and cooling unit and the steering member to the vehicle as one unit.
  6.  
  7. Temporarily install the front door upper hinge bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering member bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install both front door upper hinge bolts. Refer to Doors in the Body Section.
  12.  
  13. Release the jack from the front doors.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering member bolt caps.
  16.  
  17. Connect the evaporator drain hose.
  18.  
  19. Connect the following components:

    Air bag module control unit
     
    A/C drain hose
     
    M/T shift cable (if equipped)
     
    CVT shift cable (if equipped)
     
    Front pillar harness
     
    Door harness
     
    Fuse box
     
    SMJ
     
    Steering harness clips
     
    Shift lock cable
     

  20.  
  21. Install the lower steering member stays.
  22.  
  23. Install the instrument panel assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel in the Body Section.
  24.  
  25. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column in the Steering Section.
    NOTE
    Cap or wrap the joint of the pipe with suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid entry of contaminants.

  27. Connect the refrigerant lines to the evaporator as shown in the accompanying illustrations.
    NOTE
    Cap or wrap the joint of the pipe with suitable material such as vinyl tape to avoid entry of contaminants.

  29. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core pipes.
  30.  
  31. Reposition the lower dash insulator.
  32.  
  33. Fill the engine coolant to the cooling system. Refer to Engine Coolant in the Engine Cooling Section.
  34.  
  35. Charge the refrigerant to the A/C system. Refer to Air Conditioning System Maintenance in the Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Section
    NOTE
    Fill the radiator with the specified water and coolant mixture. Refer to Engine Coolant in the Engine Cooling Section.


    NOTE
    Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Air Conditioning System Maintenance in the Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Section.


    NOTE
    Check and adjust the front door alignment as necessary. Refer to Doors in the Body Section.
